Ananya Vinay, 12, wins National Spelling Bee and a $40,000 prize

spellingA 12-year-old girl from California won the Scripps National Spelling Bee and its $40,000 prize after spelling the word ‘marocain in a tense final in Washington.

The unflappable Anaya Vinay seized the opportunity when her steely opponent, 14-year-old Rohan Rajeev, flubbed a simple-looking but obscure Scandinavian-derived word, marram, which means a beach grass.

Before Ananya clinched victory she correctly spelled 25 words including cheiropompholyx, durchkomponiert, tchefuncte, gifblaar and heiligenschein.  More
