doorPolice have arrested a California man who was captured on video licking the doorbell of a family he’d never met. He also stole a few extension cords from their Christmas decorations.

Roberto Daniel Arroyo spent an unhealthily long time licking the doorbell of the Dungan family home on Saturday night before allegedly making off with the cords. Perhaps not surprisingly, he is known to police, who are seeking to charge him with “misdemeanor prowling, theft, and violation of probation,” according to Salinas Police spokesperson Miguel Cabrera.

The bizarre display of doorbell-lovin’ was caught on surveillance camera while Sylvia and Dave Dungan were out of town, but their children were inside the home at the time. “This just kind of reinforces how important it is to have security within your home,” Sylvia said.

The Dungan family has since disinfected their bell, bleached their doorknobs, and thoroughly cleaned their porch. Arroyo also appeared on camera relieving himself on the property and at one point seems to lie down to sleep.

teaA London man who bought a new tea kettle in a post-Christmas sale opened his new acquisition at home and found it was occupied by a snake.

The RSPCA said Barry Downs called for an animal collection officer when he opened the tea kettle he bought from an Argos store Dec. 28 and discovered after using it that a small corn snake had slithered out into his kitchen.

Downes used a saucepan lid to keep the serpent contained until RSPCA animal collection officer Ella Davies arrived.

“[Downes] explained to me that he had some problems with his sight so when he first saw the snake he thought she was string or part of the plastic packaging. Only when he picked her up did he realize she was alive!” Davies said.

fatWastewater workers in an English town announced they discovered a “fatberg” larger than the Leaning Tower of Pisa in the town’s sewers.

South West Water said sewer workers discovered the fatberg, a mass of hardened fat, oil and wet-wipes from local drains and toilets, in a sewer near a children’s playground in the English channel coast town of Sidmouth.

The service said the fatberg, which measures about 210 feet long — more than the height of the Leaning Tower of Pisa and about the size of six double-decker buses — is the largest its workers have ever found in the counties of Devon or Cornwall.

mooseA moose caused a ruckus at an Alaska hospital when it wandered into the building and calmly munched on plants in the atrium.

Witnesses said the moose wandered onto the Alaska Regional Hospital campus in Anchorage just before noon Monday and ended up strolling through the automatic doors into the Wise Physical Therapy office building.

Surprised employees captured video as the moose made its way to the building’s atrium and sampled some of the decorative plants.

“She was just going about her business, having a morning snack,” employee Stephanie Hupton told KTUU-TV.

Monica Emerton, owner of the company that maintains the atrium, told the Anchorage Daily News ”not many” of the plants were eaten by the moose.

“She was just tasting, apparently,” she said.

Witnesses said the moose wandered out of the building on her own after about 10 minutes and left the area.

snowProvincial police say a seven-year-old boy called 911 to report his dissatisfaction with receiving snow pants as a Christmas gift.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says the boy made the call at about 8 a.m. on Tuesday to complain about the gift.

He says officers ensured there wasn’t an actual emergency at the boy’s home.

Schmidt says he believes the boy was spoken to about calling 911 for non-emergencies.

Schmidt says non-urgent incidents or fake emergency calls take up time and resources from first responders that should be used for real emergencies.

tacosA 26-year-old Texas man attempted to carjack drivers at gunpoint on his quest for tacos — and ended up in handcuffs, authorities said.

Roberto A. Canamargarza, a Mexican citizen, was arrested Monday afternoon by Dallas Police after pointing a gun at different men, shooting one of them and demanding them to drive him to a taco restaurant, Dallas News reported, citing an arrest-warrant affidavit.

After demanding the first victim to take him to get tacos, the driver dropped him off and drove away.

He then did the same to the following two men — except Canamargarza fired several rounds at both of them, according to the report.

The second victim was able to run away as gunshots hit a nearby tire shop.

The third ended up getting shot in the lower body prior to Canamarganza climbing into his car.

After the car didn’t start — he allegedly ran to look for other victims.

Police arrested Canamargarza on one count of aggravated kidnapping and four counts of aggravated assault, according to a Dallas County Court arraignment sheet.

Canamargarza is being held in Dallas County jail.

germanA teenager in southwestern Germany set a four-story house on fire when she decided to blow-dry her mattress to warm it up. More than a hundred firefighters were called to the scene.

It’s not the most efficient way to get warm on a cold winter’s night nor was it the cleverest for a teenager in Freudenburg, near the German city of Trier.

The girl gave the residents of a four-story house a nasty Christmas surprise after snuggling up in bed after a night out — with a hair dryer to warm up the mattress.

All cozy, she fell asleep and set the bed on fire.

Luckily, she woke up and doused the flames with water after her father helped her drag the mattress onto the balcony.

Lulled into a false sense of security, the two went back to bed. The mattress, however, caught alight again, and the fire spread to the outer walls and all the way to the roof.

daveA woman in Great Britain is searching for leads on her missing pet, a goldfish she bought five years ago named Dave.

The woman, identified in the Swindon Advertiser as Tanya, has not seen the fish since Tuesday. Dave shared his tank with three other fish and Tanya told the Advertiser she has ruled out the possibility her dogs, a shih tzu and Yorkshire terrier, ate Dave.

“Our fish tank has a lid on it,” she said. “I’ve emptied the filter, moved all the stones in the tank. I’ve checked all around the kitchen, checked under the counters.”

Dave’s disappearance has inspired a Facebook page, called Finding Davo in homage of the hit 2003 animated film Finding Nemo, and a number of posters near her home in the Park North area of Swindon, west of London.

“This page is to find Davo the fish,” one of the first posts on the Facebook page says. “There he was last night, swimming around in his tank minding his own business…and then wooosh…he’s disappeared!”

videoA bizarre 911 call has police in Ontario urging people to remind their kids not to tie up emergency resources with frivolous complaints – whatever age those kids may be.

Ontario Provincial Police say they received a 911 call Dec. 27 from a 25-year-old woman in Delhi, Ont. who was upset with her parents. According to police, the woman placed the call after her parents questioned the amount of money she was spending on video games.

“The OPP are reminding all parents and caregivers to speak to their children, regardless of their age about the proper use of 911 and to explain that it should only be used for emergencies,” Const. Ed Sanchuk said in a statement.

Sanchuk said the average 911 call requires a 30-minute response from two police officers. When those calls are not for emergencies, he said, they may be taking the officers away from more pressing business.

‘Why don’t you die?’: Australian’s fight with a spider sparks police call

dieAn Australian man triggered an emergency police response after a noisy exchange with a spider startled a passerby into reporting what sounded like a violent disturbance to the authorities, media reported.

A neighbour was walking past a house in the west coast city of Perth on Wednesday when they heard a man repeatedly yelling “why don’t you die?” and a toddler screaming. The neighbour then called the police emergency number, according to media reports.

“Multiple police units responded (with) lights and sirens,” the reports said, quoting from a Twitter post that appeared to have been posted by police in Wanneroo, just to the north of Perth. The post has since been deleted.

The tweet showed what appeared to be a law enforcement communication log that included the initial emergency call, followed by an update 15 minutes later that said “police spoke with all parties who advised that husband had only been trying to kill a spider (has serious fear of spiders)”.

The log said the man “apologised for inconvenience to police” and that there were “no injuries sighted (except to spider)” and “no further police involvement required”.

geckoA Singapore-based snack food company apologized after a customer found a dead gecko inside a package of deep fried fish skins.

Jane Holloway said in a Facebook post that her mother and brother were eating a bag of Irvins Salted Egg Fish Skin they bought from a store in Bangkok when they discovered the lizard, which appeared to have been cooked with the fish.

“This gecko was probably deep fried with the salmon skin by the looks of it,” she wrote.

Holloway said the company apologized and offered her a refund. She said officials also offered to cover any related medical bills and told her production had been moved to a new, cleaner facility in December.

“To be honest, I thought it was just a one-off mistake. Maybe the gecko on the ceiling fell into the processing machine,” she told Business Insider.

Holloway said she started to question whether it was indeed a one-time error when two strangers sent her Facebook messages detailing similar incidents.

zooA wildlife park in Ireland said a pair of giant pelicans that flew the coop during the summer returned on their own after a months-long vacation.

The Fota Wildlife Park in Cork said the great white pelicans, which can reach a length of up to 6 feet, flew to freedom in June despite their wings having been clipped to keep them grounded.

The park said keepers were surprised when the pelicans returned on their own after about 21 weeks on the loose.

“The pelicans were examined by the vet and are fit and healthy,” a park spokeswoman told the Evening Echo newspaper.
