Bizarre Ways Chinese Companies Punished Workers

Posted By Staff

Date: January 25th, 2017

wormsFailing to meet your sales goals in China almost inevitably leads to some amount of punishment. Usually, this results in some sort of financial penalty or not receiving a bonus. To be fair, that is true for many countries around the world.

However, 2016 highlighted the levels Chinese businesses go to publicly punish, or shame, employees for their failures. I hope that other bosses do not get any ideas like these.

Not surprisingly, there is no love lost when you fail to meet your sales target. A company in Hanzhong, China, called Ai Jia, which translates to ‘Home Loving,’ took to the streets in November.

With over forty workers gathered in a public square, the manager read off the names of all the employees who failed to meet their quota. Subsequently, he unveiled a large bag full of worms, glasses of liquor, and chopsticks.  More

ikeaChina – An IKEA store in Shanghai, China claims it has been forced to enforce special rules in order to keep elderly freeloaders from virtually taking over the place for hours at a time and engaging in blind dating sessions.

IKEA is very popular in China.

Some people love the furniture mega-stores so much that they spend whole days in them without buying a single item.

Chinese Restaurant Adopts “Pay What You Want” Policy, Loses $15,000 in a Week

restChina – A naive restaurant owner in Guiyang, China, who thought that appealing to people’s inherent goodness would be a good way to attract customers to his new karst cave-themed restaurant, managed to lose over 100,000 RMB in just seven days.

Liu Xiaojun and his two business partners did the math, and decided that promoting their new restaurant by applying the now-famous “pay what you want” policy would be a good idea.

Choosing to ignore the disastrous experiences of other restaurant owners who allowed customers to pay what they wanted for the food, the three simply assumed that the vast majority of customers would be rational and fair.

They were wrong.  More

Posted By Staff

Date: May 22nd, 2016

hamCaracas – If a visitor to Venezuela is unfortunate enough to pay for anything with a foreign credit card, the eye-watering cost might suggest they were in a city pricier than Tokyo or Zurich.

A hamburger sold for 1,700 Venezuelan bolivares is $170, or a 69,000-bolivar hotel room is $6,900 a night, based on the official rate of 10 bolivares for $1.

But of course no merchant is pricing at the official rate imposed under currency controls. It’s the black market rate of 1,000 bolivares per dollar that’s applied.

But for Venezuelans paid in hyperinflation-hit bolivares, and living in an economy relying on mostly imported goods or raw materials, conditions are unthinkably expensive.  More
