Ananya Vinay, 12, wins National Spelling Bee and a $40,000 prize

spellingA 12-year-old girl from California won the Scripps National Spelling Bee and its $40,000 prize after spelling the word ‘marocain in a tense final in Washington.

The unflappable Anaya Vinay seized the opportunity when her steely opponent, 14-year-old Rohan Rajeev, flubbed a simple-looking but obscure Scandinavian-derived word, marram, which means a beach grass.

Before Ananya clinched victory she correctly spelled 25 words including cheiropompholyx, durchkomponiert, tchefuncte, gifblaar and heiligenschein.  More

Teacher named student “most likely to become a terrorist.”

terroristCHANNELVIEW, TEXAS – Outrage is growing after a Channelview teacher named a student “most likely to become a terrorist.”

Friends of the teacher say she’s devastated over the incident and it was supposed to be a joke. But few found it funny.

It happened at Aguirre Junior High when teachers handed out mock awards to students.

Lizeth Villanueva, a 7th grader, said she was embarrassed and didn’t understand why she was named “most likely to become a terrorist.”   More

Teacher and paraprofessional fight at Stone Mountain Middle School in class

fightSTONE MOUNTAIN, Georgia - The teacher and paraprofessional involved in a fight in front of students at Stone Mountain Middle School have been arrested and will be terminated by the district.

The DeKalb County School District spokesperson released this statement regarding the termination of the employees on Wednesday:

Video Shows School Aide Striking Girl With Autism

aideChicago – A school aide on a bus was caught on camera slapping a girl with autism, and now the child’s parents are speaking out.

In the surveillance video, 6-year-old Kayle was acting agitated when, it appears, she was struck by the aide.

A school official notified parents Nick Rushing and Madeline Norley about the incident.

The bus aide is employed through Lincoln Way Special Education District 843 in Frankfort.  More

Teacher orders student to kill rabbit by banging head on metal pole

rabbitParents in Texas, are angry after learning that a teacher instructed a student to slam a rabbit against metal pole in order to kill it.

A mother of Maypearl, who wished to remain anonymous to protect her daughter, said that her daughter recorded the animal cruelty incident because she thought it was wrong.

Teacher Robert Merritt instructed his student to kill the rabbit by slamming it against metal pole in order to teach survival.

After learning that the lesson was recorded, the 7th-grade girl received a zero, causing her to have a failing grade.   More

Class assignment to build toy gun sparks university lockdown

lockdownST. LOUIS – An engineering student at Saint Louis University did too well on a class assignment to build a toy gun, creating a model so realistic that it prompted a campus-wide lockdown and hunt for a possible shooting suspect.

The private, Catholic university in Missouri warned all students to shelter in place for hours Wednesday afternoon and evacuated a residence hall after reports of a man with a gun on campus and shots fired.

Police and university officials eventually tracked the source of the scare to a toy gun.

Students in the Aerospace and Mechanical “Engineering Manufacturing Procedures” class had been assigned to build a toy rubber band gun.   More

Third-graders find boa constrictor in classroom

classA 4-foot boa constrictor discovered by students in a New Jersey elementary school may have been drawn to the smell of the class pet, also a boa, officials said.

Officials at Riverside Elementary School in Princeton confirmed third-graders in Ms. Reilly’s class alerted the teacher Tuesday afternoon to the presence of the boa constrictor in the back of the classroom.

A spokeswoman for Princeton schools said the school’s science teacher placed the snake, which the children dubbed Zeus, in a cage overnight before turning it over to a Montgomery Township animal control officer.Officials said the students…   More
