University boss installs escape hatch following student protests

Posted By Staff

Date: August 9th, 2016

ucCalifornia – The chancellor at University of California Berkeley has an exit plan in case student protesters storm his office.

Nicholas Dirks, the school’s chancellor, installed a $9,000 escape hatch in a hallway outside his office to “provide egress” if potential student protesters descend on the administration building, according to the campus newspaper, The Daily Californian.

The emergency exit — built late last month — was ordered in response to an April 2015 protest during which students stormed the chancellor’s suite and staged a sit-in outside his office, the paper reported.

Students reportedly banged on desks and chanted loudly before being escorted out of the building, some in handcuffs.  More

Oberlin students want to abolish midterms and any grades below C

Posted By Staff

Date: May 25th, 2016

oberlinStudents at Oberlin College are asking the school to put academics on the back burner so they can better turn their attention to activism.

More than 1,300 students at the Midwestern liberal arts college have now signed a petition asking that the college get rid of any grade below a C for the semester, and some students are requesting alternatives to the standard written midterm examination, such as a conversation with a professor in lieu of an essay.

The students say that between their activism work and their heavy course load, finding success within the usual grading parameters is increasingly difficult.

“A lot of us worked alongside community members in Cleveland who were protesting,” Megan Bautista, a co-liaison in Oberlin’s student government, said, referring to the protests surrounding the shooting death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice by a police officer in 2014. “But we needed to organize on campus as well — it wasn’t sustainable to keep driving 40 minutes away. A lot of us started suffering academically.”  More

North Carolina school board votes to stop naming valedictorians

Posted By Staff

Date: May 23rd, 2016

valApparently working your hardest to be the best you can be — and being recognized for the effort — is one lesson a North Carolina school board no longer believes is worth teaching.

Citing what it calls “unhealthy” competition among students, the Wake County school board is the latest in the country to make valedictorians and salutatorians a thing of the past, The News & Observer of Charlotte reports.

The school board unanimously gave initial approval last week to a policy that would prohibit high school principals from naming valedictorians and salutatorians – titles reserved for the two graduating seniors with the highest grade-point averages – after 2018, according to the newspaper.  More

Date: May 22nd, 2016

stoneA Summerville, South Carolina, High School student was arrested and suspended after writing about killing a dinosaur with a gun.

Alex Stone, 16, was charged with disorderly conduct over his creative writing assignment, WCSC reports.

The arrest was “completely absurd,” his attorney, David Aylor, said.

Stone hired Aylor to appeal the school suspension and handle the legal issues of his arrest.

“This is a perfect example of ‘political correctness’ that has exceeded the boundaries of common sense,” Aylor said in a statement.  More

Allison Wint, from Battle Creek, was terminated from Harper Creek Middle School. The substitute teacher says she had no idea that saying an anatomical word would mean losing her job.

“Yes, I did say that word however I was saying it in the context of art history; I wasn’t being vulgar,” she says.

Wint says she mentioned the word during an eighth grade session when trying to describe past interpretations of Georgia O’Keefe paintings.  More

judyUSA – Nearly 10 percent of college graduates in the United States think that TV host Judith “Judge Judy” Sheindlin sits on the Supreme Court, according to a recent study.

When the survey sample is expanded to the general American public, the results are even worse — with 13 percent saying Sheindlin is a member of SCOTUS.

The study — commissioned by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni in late August 2015 — found college grads lacked basic knowledge on all branches of government.  More

Virginia School District Shuts Down After Furious Backlash Against Arabic Homework

Posted By Staff

Date: January 2nd, 2016

virginiaVirginia – An entire Virginia school district shut down early for the holidays amid intense backlash against a teacher using an Islamic phrase to teach her students calligraphy.

School officials were concerned about safety after criticism from local parents turned into threats pouring in from around the country.

Cheryl LaPorte, a geography teacher at Riverheads High School in Augusta County, Virginia, gave her students homework on Dec. 11 to teach them about the intricacies of calligraphy.

The phrase was actually from the Shahada, a daily Islamic prayer that translates into “There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of God.”  More

Exorcisms are as Popular as Ever

Posted By Staff

Date: December 29th, 2015

exTexas – At Texas State University, I teach an honors course called “Demonology, Possession, and Exorcism.”

It’s not a gut course. My students produce research papers on topics that range from the role of sleep paralysis in reports of demonic attacks to contemporary murder cases in which defendants have claimed supernatural forces compelled them to commit crimes.

In fact, talk of demons isn’t unusual in Texas.

The first day of class, when we watched a clip of an alleged exorcism at an Austin Starbucks, many of my students said that they’d seen similar scenes in the towns where they’d grown up.  More
