veganItaly – Parents who restrict their children to a vegan diet could face a jail term if a controversial bill is passed by the Italian parliament.

Such parents, the draft bill claims, are imposing a diet “devoid of essential elements for [children's] healthy and balanced growth”.

It follows a number of high-profile Italian cases where malnourished children have been taken into care.

In four cases over the last 18 months, malnourished children were hospitalized in Italy after being fed a vegan diet.  More

cuppingRio – At the start of the Rio Olympics, several members of Team USA arrived to compete with what some people have described as odd-looking marks on their bodies.

Although the red circles on the skin of such athletes as swimmer Michael Phelps and gymnast Alex Naddour may appear accidental, they are actually markers of cupping, a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) technique used for performance improvement and healing.

The ancient practice of cupping has been used for more than 2,000 years in Oriental medicine and traditionally uses a flame to heat a cup that is applied to the skin.  More

Miami Sprays Dangerous Insecticide That Causes Microcephaly

Date: August 8th, 2016

sprayFlorida – The Zika scare has not only stirred massive media hysteria; it has now unleashed a dangerous campaign to spray a neurotoxic chemical over the city of Miami and surrounding areas.

What damage it will cause remains to be seen, but its use as a means of controlling mosquitoes and stopping Zika should raise serious alarm bells, as its effectiveness has already been discredited and its risks are unacceptable.

The crew and aircraft used in the operation was flown in from Sarasota. The King Air Beechcraft fixed-wing, dual-engine plane is specially equipped with nozzles on the wing to disperse the chemical, called Naled, that is meant to kill adult mosquitoes that could be carrying the Zika virus.

Naled can cause respiratory problems in people who are exposed to it and long term exposure can cause possible neurological problems, according to Cornell University.  More

New antibiotic – inside the human nose

Posted By Staff

Date: July 27th, 2016

noseNose-dwelling microbes produce an antibiotic which kills the hospital superbug MRSA, scientists have discovered.

The finding suggests that the human body might harbor a rich variety of bacteria that could be harnessed in the fight against antibiotic resistance.

Antibiotic resistance is a growing cause for concern, with experts warning of an impending “apocalyptic” situation in which patients die following routine surgery because of infections that can no longer be treated.

Among the superbugs of concern are strains of Staphylococcus aureus, known as MRSA, that are resistant to a number of antibiotics.  More

Woman Nearly Loses Eyesight After Undergoing “Punching Therapy”

Posted By Staff

Date: July 9th, 2016

punchChina – An old woman from Harbin, China, has almost gone blind after enduring numerous beatings as a form of therapy.

The simple-minded lady actually believed that by getting hit in the head and other parts of her body would actually improved her health.

The woman, known only by her surname – Bao – started attending “punching therapy” sessions in 2011, at the recommendation of a therapist  from the “Natural Shock Health Club.”

Somehow, receiving heavy blows to the head, eyes and body didn’t convince Bao that the treatment was a seriously bad idea, so she kept attending the painful one-hour sessions twice or three times a week.  More

Elderly and middle-aged women can be seen hugging rocks or simply lying on them with towels on their faces all around the city, from parks to squares and pretty much wherever else large, sun-heated rocks can be found.

At first, people thought the women were engaging in some mysterious artistic performance, but local reporters approached them, they said it was a traditional medical treatment to help them cure various illnesses.

One woman, identified only by her surname, Lo, said that she started lying on hot rocks to treat her synovitis and stiff muscles, after a relative suffering from similar ailments did it for an extended period of time and got cured.  More

Why ER Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics Not Excited About July 4

Posted By Staff

Date: July 3rd, 2016

erALHAMBRA - Fireworks can be dangerous and deadly, a fact that many people don’t seem to take seriously when celebrating Independence Day.

Capt. Tim Sell is a paramedic with Pasadena’s Fire Department. Even though all fireworks are illegal in the city, they still roll out on calls from people who don’t realize how dangerous fireworks can be.

“People have had some extensive burns to their hands and face as well as loss of digits and limbs,” Sell said. “A sparkler can reach up to 2,000 degrees.”

Last year, 11 people died using fireworks, and 11,900 people were hurt, the most in 15 years, according to a report released Thursday by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.  More

Woman gets blood poisoning after kissing dog

Posted By Staff

Date: July 3rd, 2016

fidoA new case from BMJ Case Reports reported that a 70-year-old woman was infected with sepsis, likely from her Italian greyhound.

Although no scratch or bite was found, doctors noted that “close petting including licks was reported,” according to the study.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus septicaemia, a bacterium, is frequently isolated in the oral cavities of dogs and cats.

While rare, it typically causes infection after a dog bite, making this case unusual, study authors noted.  More

Man killed by his pet cat

Posted By Staff

Date: June 30th, 2016

catThe Toronto man looked in ill health generally, had vague abdominal pains and was wheezing when he showed up at the emergency department after falling at home.

Two weeks later — despite major surgery and intensive antibiotic treatment — he was dead, septic shock having shut down his vital organs.

The cause was as surprising as his precipitous decline: a bite on the thumb from a pet cat.

The nip transmitted bacteria common to household animals, which in turn triggered a seldom-reported complication — an aneurysm in the thick vessel that delivers blood to much of the body, according to a newly published case study by the doctors who tried to save the man.  More
