Surgical instrument pulled from man’s stomach 18 years after surgery

instrumentA Vietnamese man has had a hemostat removed from his abdomen which were left behind during surgery 18 years ago, after reporting a stomachache that was nearly two decades in the making.

Ma Van Nhat, now 54, underwent surgery in 1998 after a car accident and only recently discovered that doctors had left an unwelcome gift behind when they closed him up.

Doctors discovered the 15-centimetre (six-inch) hemostat near his colon after a recent ultrasound.  More

cancerPHILADELPHIA – By most accounts Yogi, a bichon shih tzu mix, is lucky to be alive.

“It was the longest weekend of my life,” said Yogi’s mom Linda Coppola of Langhorne, Bucks County. In January 2016, a routine trip to the vetrevealed Yogi had lymphoma.

“They said we had to get treatment right away,” Coppola said.

“It’s quite an aggressive type of disease,” said Dr. Nicola Mason of the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Veterinary Medicine, adding “often times initially the dogs actually feel quite well but without treatment it can progress and quite rapidly lead to some fatalities within about 6-8 weeks if they’re not treated.”  More

Woman goes to hospital with ‘kidney stones,’ comes home with baby boy

stonesGeorgia – It’s been an interesting few days for Stephanie Jaegers and her husband, Michael.

It all began Tuesday night when Michael got a call from his wife, who said she she was having abdominal pains and needed to go to the hospital.

She thought the pain came from kidney stones.

When they arrived at Piedmont Henry Hospital in Stockbridge, Ga., the doctor asked if Stephanie might be pregnant. She said no, and doctors began preparing her for x-rays.  More

North Carolina mom accused of making son sick

tuttFORT WORTH – A Cleburne woman whose 13-year-old son’s “terminal illness” prompted donations, media coverage and a visit from a wrestling superstar, was arrested Friday on accusations that she lied about her son’s medical condition, our content partners at the Star-Telegram report.

Danita Tutt, 40, is accused of causing serious bodily injury to her son, Colby, by lying about his medical history to the boy’s doctors, prompting the boy to undergo unnecessary surgeries and be placed on unneeded pain medications.

Those surgeries, police allege, included placement of a central line that later lead to a potentially life-threatening blood infection.

She is also alleged to have withheld food and water from the boy, documents show.  More

Patient set to undergo the world’s first human head transplant

valRussia – The terminally ill man who is set to become the world’s first head transplant recipient says more details about his extraordinary surgery will be revealed next month.

Valery Spiridonov, a computer scientist from Russia, is set to undergo the risky procedure next year.

Today, the 31-year-old is wheelchair reliant due to a muscle-wasting disease, announced his neurosurgeon would explain how the plan was progressing in September.

New antibiotic – inside the human nose

noseNose-dwelling microbes produce an antibiotic which kills the hospital superbug MRSA, scientists have discovered.

The finding suggests that the human body might harbor a rich variety of bacteria that could be harnessed in the fight against antibiotic resistance.

Antibiotic resistance is a growing cause for concern, with experts warning of an impending “apocalyptic” situation in which patients die following routine surgery because of infections that can no longer be treated.

Among the superbugs of concern are strains of Staphylococcus aureus, known as MRSA, that are resistant to a number of antibiotics.  More
