How A Cancer Treatment That’s Helping Dogs Could Help Humans

Posted By Staff

Date: October 28th, 2016

cancerPHILADELPHIA – By most accounts Yogi, a bichon shih tzu mix, is lucky to be alive.

“It was the longest weekend of my life,” said Yogi’s mom Linda Coppola of Langhorne, Bucks County. In January 2016, a routine trip to the vetrevealed Yogi had lymphoma.

“They said we had to get treatment right away,” Coppola said.

“It’s quite an aggressive type of disease,” said Dr. Nicola Mason of the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Veterinary Medicine, adding “often times initially the dogs actually feel quite well but without treatment it can progress and quite rapidly lead to some fatalities within about 6-8 weeks if they’re not treated.”  More

Date: October 21st, 2016

botoxGuys are now getting Botox injected to their—ahem—ballsacks to decrease sweating, reduce wrinkles, and make their scrotum appear bigger.

In fact, the number of fellas looking to give their family jewels a facelift has almost doubled, according to UK tabloid The Sun Online—although that number is still pretty small overall.

“The idea of injecting Botox into the scrotum to smooth the wrinkles has been around for many years among plastic surgeons; however, none of us thought it would be something consumers would request,” says Matthew Schulman, M.D., a board-certified plastic surgeon based in New York City.  More

New antibiotic – inside the human nose

Posted By Staff

Date: July 27th, 2016

noseNose-dwelling microbes produce an antibiotic which kills the hospital superbug MRSA, scientists have discovered.

The finding suggests that the human body might harbor a rich variety of bacteria that could be harnessed in the fight against antibiotic resistance.

Antibiotic resistance is a growing cause for concern, with experts warning of an impending “apocalyptic” situation in which patients die following routine surgery because of infections that can no longer be treated.

Among the superbugs of concern are strains of Staphylococcus aureus, known as MRSA, that are resistant to a number of antibiotics.  More

Posted By Staff

Date: July 3rd, 2016

erALHAMBRA - Fireworks can be dangerous and deadly, a fact that many people don’t seem to take seriously when celebrating Independence Day.

Capt. Tim Sell is a paramedic with Pasadena’s Fire Department. Even though all fireworks are illegal in the city, they still roll out on calls from people who don’t realize how dangerous fireworks can be.

“People have had some extensive burns to their hands and face as well as loss of digits and limbs,” Sell said. “A sparkler can reach up to 2,000 degrees.”

Last year, 11 people died using fireworks, and 11,900 people were hurt, the most in 15 years, according to a report released Thursday by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.  More

seaSea lice are popping up all over Gulf Coast beaches. While many sightings are along the panhandle, biologists say they expect to start seeing more move south along the coastline.

Sea lice are microscopic and impossible to spot in the water. They aren’t the kind of lice you may be thinking of.

Sea lice are actually jellyfish larvae and while they are tiny, they still have the same stinging cells as a full grown jellyfish, and they’ll leave a mark.

The rash they cause is called sunbathers eruption.  Source
