Heimlich Maneuver Inventor Uses It For First Time At 96

heimThe man who gave his name to the Heimlich Maneuver got his first chance to use it in real life at the age of 96.

Dr. Henry Heimlich, a surgeon who now lives in a Cincinnati, Ohio, retirement home, was eating dinner when another resident began choking on a piece of meat, The Guardian reported.

A staff member was on the way to help, but Heimlich stepped in.

“I did the Heimlich [Maneuver] – of course,” Heimlich told The Guardian in an interview.  More

Vet Intern Saves Dog’s Life At The Last Second

internA vet intern made a discovery which saved a dog’s life just moments before he was to be euthanized.

Ollie the Collie’s owners quickly became worried when their dog stopped acting like himself and eventually saw a dramatic decline in mobility.

“When his mobility was shot and he was paralyzed, it was just weird seeing him just laying their on the floor, knowing he had so much more life in him,” Ozzie’s owner, Falline Fate told KPTV.

Fate feared that her beloved family dog could be in his last days.  More

Florida woman taken to hospital with shark attached to arm

sharkBOCA RATON, Florida – A 23-year-old Florida woman bitten by a 2-foot nurse shark was taken to the hospital with it still attached to her arm, a fire rescue spokesman said.

A splint board was used to support the unidentified woman’s arm and the shark as she lay on the stretcher and was placed into an ambulance at Red Reef Park off the Atlantic Ocean, Ocean Rescue Capt. Clint Tracy said.

 The shark was killed by a bystander before the fire department’s arrival “but was still attached to her arm” when she arrived at Boca Regional Hospital in stable condition, fire rescue spokesman Robert Lemons said.  More

Indian woman gives birth at the estimated age of 72

kaurBENGALURU, India – An Indian couple who are both in their 70s have had their first child after undergoing two years of fertility treatments.

Daljinder Kaur, who is believed to be about 72 but is lacking a birth certificate, gave birth to a healthy baby boy at Haryana’s National Fertility Center, which is famed for offering fertility treatments to women well past menopause.

The baby was fathered by Kaur’s husband of 46 years, Mohinder Singh Gill, 79.

“Every one asked me to adopt a baby but I never wanted to. Now I have my own child,” Kaur told The Telegraph.  More

Police Say Teens Getting High, Sick From Eating Plant Seeds

morningSEEKONK – The Seekonk Police Department is getting the word out to parents that some teens have been eating plant seeds in order to get high from their hallucinogenic properties.

Police Chief Craig Mace said his department first heard of the problem when some teens who had eaten the seeds in neighboring Somerset got sick and were hospitalized.

Now, the seeds have been found in the Seekonk School District.

“We as human beings have a tendency to come up with different ways to become impaired, or however you want to describe it,” said Mace.   More

A growing body of evidence has placed increasing importance on the balance of bacteria in our gut.

Imbalances in the gut microbiome can contribute to a number of complex conditions, including obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome and allergies, studies have shown. 

But, for the first time, scientists believe traces of the bacteria can survive outside the body, raising the possibility that it could be ingested.  More

WHAT KILLED PRINCE?

prince dead12:25 PM PT — The Sheriff’s department says Prince was found in an elevator at Paisley Park. They performed CPR, but were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 10:07 AM Central Time.

11:27 AM PST – The Carver County Sheriff’s Office tells TMZ they are now investigating the circumstances of Prince’s death. At this time, there are no signs of foul play.

The artist known as Prince has died … TMZ has learned. He was 57.

Prince’s body was discovered at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota early Thursday morning.  More

Australian man loses 70 pounds in 100 days of potato-only diet

dietMELBOURNE, Ap – An Australian man said 100 days into his potato-only diet that he has already lost 70 pounds and lowered his blood cholesterol.

Andrew Flinders Taylor, 36, of Melbourne, announced in January he would eat nothing but white potatoes and sweet potatoes for 366 days in a bid to improve his health.

Taylor said his diet, along with exercising six days a week, has caused him to lost 70 pounds and he posted a video of his doctor explaining his blood cholesterol has lowered.  More

‘Anti-vax’ mother’s regret over whooping cough ‘nightmare’

vaxAn Australian mother has said she regrets refusing the whooping cough vaccination during pregnancy after she passed the potentially fatal infection to her newborn baby.

Cormit Avital said she had turned down the vaccination because she was a “healthy, fit, organic woman”.

She caught the disease shortly before giving birth and passed it to Eva, who has spent a month in intensive care.

“If I could turn back time I would protect myself,” she said, in the video released by Gold Coast Health, the regional health authority.  More

glueSHENZHEN, China – A woman in China who sealed her eyes shut when she mistook super glue for eye drops avoided damage to her eyes thanks to her contact lenses, doctors said.

Zhao Xing Nvzi, 20, arrived at the Shenzhen Eye Hospital March 10 and told doctors she had accidentally super-glued her eyes closed when she confused the adhesive for her contact lens re-wetting drops.

The hospital’s chief physician, Dr. Zhanhang Kai, said the woman did not want her eyelashes to be cut off, so he instead spent more than an hour carefully separating the woman’s lashes and eye lids.  More

Doctors today described the unexpected results as ‘staggering’ – and said the new two-pronged technique could spare thousands of women from gruelling chemotherapy.

The UK team, announcing their results at the European Breast Cancer Conference in Amsterdam, said they had never seen breast patients respond so quickly to a cancer treatment.

Doctors at the the Archbishop Loayza National Hospital in Lima, Peru, have finally granted Rojas some relief by performing a 3-hour operation to remove the 35.3-pound mass in her abdomen, CNN reported.

‘Super lice’ outbreak hits 25 states

liceA strain of so-called ‘super lice’ has hit a reported 25 states, causing concern and frustration among parents because the bugs can’t be killed with most over-the-counter treatments.

The treatments, known as pyrethroids, had a 100 percent success rate in 2000 against lice but now only work in 25 percent of cases, KSDK.com reported.

A new FDA-approved treatment called AirAlle, which was developed by Lice Clinics of America, has been found to be effective against the super lice, with treatments costing about $170.

“We use heated air, and we dehydrate the lice and the eggs in a single treatment,” Claire Roberts, CEO of Lice Clinics America, told KSDK.com.  More
