Posted By Staff

Date: May 2nd, 2017

atariOver the years, the Atari video game burial had becoming something of an urban legend.

Atari went out into the New Mexico desert and buried all its unsold E.T. video games (one of the biggest flops in the history of gaming).

Well, in 2014, the government of New Mexico went out into the desert to figure out the truth…and they found the video games.

Tokyo grows on its own trash

trashOn a windswept island in the middle of Tokyo Bay, a small mountain rises above the waves.

A few seagulls and crows swoop above the brown reeds as Mount Fuji looms over the horizon.

The island seems pastoral enough, but it’s totally fake and made out of garbage.

The New Sea Surface Disposal Site is the final resting place for trash churned out by Tokyo’s 23 wards.  More

Ivory Soap That Sank

Posted By Staff

Date: December 26th, 2016

ivoryFor over 100 years, Procter & Gamble has marketed Ivory Soap with the slogan, “It floats.”

According to legend, the discovery of how to make the soap float (and that consumers would find this desirable) was an accident.

Supposedly a workman left the soap mixing machine on for an extra half hour, thereby mixing more air into a batch, making the resulting bars buoyant.

But in 2004 evidence was unearthed indicating that the discovery wasn’t actually accidental.

However, over the years there have been a few cases reported of rogue bars of Ivory Soap that refused to float.  More

Lt. Col. Oliver North – 1987. We should have listened.

Posted By Staff

Date: July 27th, 2016

northIt was 1987! At a lecture the other day they were playing an old news video of Lt. Col. Oliver North testifying at the Iran-Contra hearings during the Reagan Administration. There was Ollie in front of God and country getting the third degree, but what he said was stunning!

He was being drilled by a senator, “did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?”

Ollie replied, “yes Sir, I did”.

The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience,

“Isn’t that just a little excessive?”  More

The Curse of the Goddess Pele

Posted By Staff

Date: December 29th, 2015

peleHawaii – Potential visitors are warned about it in all the guidebooks and tourist materials. Anyone who takes Pele’s natural treasures home will suffer her wrath in the form of a curse, a fate that involves a lot of bad luck.

And the curse seems to work. The Hawaiian post office regularly receives packages containing stolen treasures. From stones and rocks to sticks and shells, countless tourists mail their stolen souvenirs back.

Some include letters to Pele herself. Others detail the bad luck their theft has brought them. Packages and letters attribute death, depression, illness, and—bizarrely—the “bad luck” of winning a lottery that wasn’t as big as they’d hoped. It’s all thanks to Pele’s bad luck curse.

Some proclaim to not even believe in the curse or to have suffered bad luck at all . . . but they think the theft is nevertheless standing in the way of their good luck.

Galveston residents considered the island and their homes entirely safe because of crime family

Posted By Staff

Date: September 12th, 2015

balineseGalveston, Texas - Rosario Maceo (Sr.), also known as Papa Rose or Rose Maceo, was a Sicilian immigrant and organized crime boss in Galveston, Texas.

Because of his efforts and those of his brother Sam, Galveston Island became a nationally known resort town during the early and mid 20th century, during a period known as Galveston’s Wide-Open Era.

They owned various restaurant and casino venues including the now-vanished Hollywood Dinner Club and the Balinese Room (picture).

He became an Al Capone-like figure in the city. Sometimes known as the “Iron Glove,” Maceo was the enforcer and head of operations for the business empire he and his brother formed. (Continued at Strange Facts)

I give up.

This catalog of woe simply cannot all be written off as mere coincidence.

This is the most infamous picture that has ever been taken of a United States President and a dog

Posted By Staff

Date: August 29th, 2015

earsPresident Lyndon Johnson had two registered Beagles, Him and Her, dogs that he loved dearly.

He was often photographed with them.

This picture taken in 1964 caused the anger of many dog lovers when he lifted Him by the ears while talking with a group of reporters and photographers on the lawn of the White House.

Like everything a President does, this incident was magnified out of all proportion and was the subject of many media stories and cartoons for weeks.  More

Posted By Staff

Date: August 22nd, 2015

shcFrom Strange Facts – Spontaneous human combustion is the alleged burning of a person’s body without a readily apparent, identifiable external source of ignition. The combustion may result in simple burns and blisters to the skin, smoking, or a complete incineration of the body. The latter is the form most often recognized as SHC.

Recent cases:
In 1951, the Mary Reeser case recaptured the public interest in Spontaneous Human Combustion. Mrs. Reeser, 67, was found in her apartment on the morning of July 2, 1951, reduced to a pile of ashes, a skull, and a completely undamaged left foot.  More

The curse of the Omen

Posted By Staff

Date: August 21st, 2015

omenFrom Strange Facts – In June 1975, just two months before filming of the movie was due to begin, Gregory Peck’s son had killed himself with a bullet to the head.

The actor set off for London in September in a somber mood which wasn’t much soothed when his plane was hit by lightning high above the Atlantic.

A few weeks later, executive producer Mace Neufeld also left Los Angeles. You think lightning doesn’t strike twice? It does in this story. “It was the roughest five minutes I’ve ever had on an airliner,” says Neufeld. The curse of The Omen had begun.

There was much more to come.  More

Sogen Kato’s mummified corpse was found in his bedroom

Posted By Staff

Date: August 20th, 2015

katoFrom Strange Facts: Sogen Kato was thought to have been Tokyo’s oldest man until July 2010, when his mummified corpse was found in his bedroom.

It was concluded he had likely died in November 1978, aged 79, and his family had never announced his death in an attempt to preserve his oldest man record.

Relatives had rebuffed attempts by ward officials to see Kato in preparations for Respect for the Aged Day later that year, citing various reasons from him being a “human vegetable” to becoming a Sokushinbutsu (practice of observing austerity to the point of death and mummification.)

The cause of death was not determined due to the state of Kato’s body.  More

John Wayne died from cancer because of where the movie, The Conqueror, was filmed

Posted By Staff

Date: August 18th, 2015

The ConquerorFrom Strange Facts: The Conqueror is a 1956 CinemaScope epic film produced by Howard Hughes and starring John Wayne as the Mongol conqueror Genghis Khan.

Other performers included Susan Hayward, Agnes Moorehead, and Pedro Armendáriz. Directed by actor/director Dick Powell, the film was principally shot near St. George, Utah.

The exterior scenes were shot on location near St. George, Utah, 137 miles downwind of the United States government’s Nevada National Security Site.

In 1953, extensive above-ground nuclear weapons testing (11 total) occurred at the test site as part of Operation Upshot-Knothole.

The cast and crew spent many difficult weeks on location, and in addition Hughes later shipped 60 tons of dirt back to Hollywood in order to match the Utah terrain and lend verisimilitude to studio re-shoots.

The filmmakers knew about the nuclear tests but the federal government reassured residents that the tests caused no hazard to public health.  More
