tongsAn Austin man was arrested after unsuccessfully attempting to rob a Whataburger with a pair of tongs, according to officers.

After reviewing surveillance video, authorities say 44-year-old David Garcia-Gonzalez, who had difficulty maintaining balance while walking, approached a Whataburger at 2305 Burleson Road.

The suspect approached her from behind and started jabbing her with the tongs while repeatedly demanding money.

Garcia-Gonzalez was eventually confronted by another employee, who ordered him to leave the restaurant.

The suspect fled the scene but was later detained by officers at a car wash just east of the Whataburger.

Garcia-Gonzalez now faces charges for robbery by threat, a second-degree felony.

headsPolice arrested 11 people and closed a restaurant after two human heads wrapped in cellophane were discovered at a hotel restaurant that had been serving human flesh.

A tip-off led police to the macabre discovery in Anambra, Nigeria, with 11 people being arrested and AK-47 guns and other weapons being seized.

Human flesh was apparently being sold as an expensive treat at the restaurant, with authorities saying that roasted human head was even on the menu.

“I went to the hotel early this year, after eating, I was told that a lump of meat was being sold at N700, I was surprised,” a pastor who had visited the eatery said.

“So I did not know it was human meat that I ate at such expensive price.

“What is this country turning into? Can you imagine people selling human flesh as meat,” he added. “Seriously I’m beginning to fear people in this part of the world. ”

costcoThings got a little dicey at a South Carolina Costco after a couple of septuagenarians got into a physical altercation over some free samples.

According to police, a 70-year-old man claimed the incident began while he was standing in line for a free piece of cheese at a Costco in Greenville. As he was waiting, another older man, 72, “cut in line, took some cheese and walked off,” according to an incident report obtained by The State newspaper.

But it didn’t end there.

Later, as the 70-year-old was waiting for a free cheeseburger sample, he saw the alleged line-jumper approaching and addressed him, sarcastically telling the man “he could get in front of him because he knew he would just cut the line anyway.”

The 72-year-old then allegedly called him a “jerk” and clocked him on the side of his head, knocking off his hat and glasses, according to The State.

puddlesA driver in Canada apparently was fired after a video of them swerving a company truck to seemingly splash pedestrians with puddle water was posted online.

The dashcam footage, posted Friday, shows a large Ford vehicle with a ladder and other items atop swerving all over the lane in Ottawa, driving toward puddles and splashing those walking past.

The company’s name, Black & McDonald Limited, is seen displayed on the truck as the driver moves past the car filming the scene.

Black & McDonald Limited, a “multi-trade prime contractor,” took to Facebook to apologize for the driver’s actions, which they labeled as “unacceptable driving.”

“We want to reassure the public that safety is our #1 priority,” the company wrote. “This is an isolated incident and the individual is no longer employed with Black & McDonald.”

Sgt. Mark Gatien, of the Ottawa Police Service, tweeted that authorities saw the video. He thanked the company for “their quick and decisive action,” and also thanked a patrol officer “who assisted in this outcome.”

jetPolice say an Arkansas man accused of trying to steal a commercial jet told investigators he thought piloting the plane would involve little more than pushing buttons and pulling levers.

Investigators say 18-year-old Zemarcuis Devon Scott wanted to fly to an out-of-state concert when he hopped inside an American Eagle jet at Texarkana Regional Airport.

The Texarkana Gazette reports Scott was inside the cockpit when he was arrested early on July 4. He was charged Monday and remained jailed Thursday on commercial burglary and attempted theft of property charges.

Envoy Air operates the plane. The company says the 44-seat jet wasn’t damaged.

Miller County jail records don’t list an attorney for Scott, who lives in Texarkana.

An affidavit says police found Scott after responding to reports of a man jumping an airport fence.

sharkTwo men have confessed to snatching a small shark from a Texas aquarium’s interactive touch tank, then whisking it away, wrapping it in a blanket and concealing it in a baby stroller, police say.

Miss Helen, the 16-inch-long (40-centimeter-long) gray horn shark, was returned to the San Antonio Aquarium on Monday night, two days after the heist was captured on surveillance video .

“Sharknapping: Unsuccessful!” the aquarium posted on Facebook afterward.

The surveillance footage shows a man plucking the shark from the tank and carrying it away, off camera, still dripping water. Another man is then seen depositing a blanket-wrapped item into a stroller and walking off, accompanied by the first man and a woman carrying a child.

Police said the men put the shark into a bucket before placing it into the stroller.

The shark was recovered Monday night from a home filled with fish tanks and other marine life, said Leon Valley Police Chief Joseph Salvaggio.

Salvaggio said the men confessed to the shark snatching, and investigators planned to talk with the woman Tuesday. Salvaggio told San Antonio TV station KSAT that one of the men was knowledgeable about marine life and likely went to the aquarium specifically for that shark.

“The individual obviously had some knowledge on how to deal with these types of animals, we said that from the very beginning, otherwise why take it? And when we got into the garage and into the house, it looked like almost a mock-up of (the aquarium),” he said.

Authorities are speaking with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to determine whether any federal charges can be filed, Salvaggio said.

twinsA pair of identical twins in Michigan are getting married on consecutive days — to another set of identical twins.

Nick Lewan and Kassie Bevier met in 2014 at Grand Valley State University when their psychology professor asked if anyone in the class was a twin.

“I was looking around and I looked behind and I was like, ‘Oh. I’m in trouble now,’” Lewan told MLive.com.

The couple soon ended up going on a double date to church with their respective siblings, Zack Lewan and Krissie Bevier.

“We’re standing there in the church getting ready to sing and they just start belting it out,” Kassie said of the twin brothers. “They were actually singing. My sister and I looked at each other like, ‘Who are these guys?’”

The Lewans proposed during a trip to the Henry Ford Museum with both sets of parents.

“It basically happened at the same time….which is par for the course for us. We do things in twos,” Kassie Bevier told WILX-TV.

Krissie and Zack are scheduled to get married Friday, followed by Kassie and Nick’s ceremony on Saturday. Both couples are slated to stand at each other’s weddings and a joint reception is planned for Saturday.

snakeA California man visiting relatives in Florida had a surprising wildlife encounter when a snake dropped out of a banana tree and landed on his arm.

Jake Collier, 26, of San Francisco, said he was visiting his in-laws’ home in Melbourne Beach on Monday when a snake abruptly fell from a banana tree on the property about 10 p.m. and wrapped around his arm.

“The snake literally flew off the tree and wrapped around my arm. And I grabbed it and I threw it back into the bush,” Collier told WKMG-TV.

Collier said he wasn’t sure if the snake had bit him, so he called 911 and was examined by emergency responders, who determined he was OK.

Keith Winsten, executive director of the Brevard Zoo, said the encounter was likely just as surprising for the serpent.

“Sounds like the snake might have fallen and the guy was nice enough to break the snake’s fall,” Winsten said. “I’m sure the snake appreciated that.”

He said the reptile was likely a non-venomous rat snake.

Rat snakes have been known to make unexpected appearances in unusual locations, including slithering across a North Carolina couple’s doorbell camera and in the middle of a crowded Texas mall.

Collier said his in-laws decided to cut down the tree.

“If it’s going to become a hazard where a snake can jump out at you, I think it’s a good idea to take it down,” Collier said. “My arm hasn’t turned black or blue or fallen off yet, so it’s OK.”

tvA Connecticut man who won a $100,000 lottery jackpot said he took his numbers from an unusual source — a 1958 episode of TV series Bronco.

Francisco Rios of Hartford told Connecticut Lottery officials that for the past year and a half he has been using the numbers 22-2-18-12-28 to play the Cash5 drawing, and the numbers came from an episode of classic Western TV series Bronco.

“[The episode] was about a guy who was buried in a glacier for 22 years, 2 months, 18 days, 12 hours and 28 minutes,” Francisco said. “I said, 22, 2, 18, 12 and 28. That’s five numbers — those are good numbers for Cash5!”

Francisco’s numbers proved their worth Friday night.

“I was watching the drawing on TV and saw the first numbers were 12, 18, 22, and thought yeah — I won $10! And then 22 — I got $300! And the final number is 28, and I jumped out of the chair! I never thought I could hit five numbers!” he said.

The winner said he is making plans for his windfall.

“I need a better car, one that’s good in the snow. I’ll share a little bit with family; pay all the bills and save the rest for emergencies,” he said.

BEEFLast summer, McDonald’s Japan rolled out a “Tokyo Roast Beef Burger.” The ads featured what looked like real slices of roast beef.

That wasn’t necessarily true of the actual burgers. Ditto for the Tokyo Roast Beef Muffin that was sold during the same period.

According to Asahi, Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency recently said that McDonald’s broke the law, misrepresenting its products and misleading customers. It warned the fast-food giant, telling McDonald’s to take steps to prevent this from happening again.

The commercials showed roast beef being sliced, but only half the slices were actually roast beef.

The rest were “processed and reformed meat.”

The council thanked him for his “quick-thinking tinkling” but said it was confident its own sprinkler system would have worked, as The Sun reported.

Essex Fire Service confirmed it was called but no action was required.

Mr Watson, 22, from Houghton Regis in Bedfordshire, was visiting the 1.3 mile (2.1km) pier with his partner and daughter on Friday at about 19:30 BST, when he noticed smoke and small flames on the wooden planks.

The weather had turned and “we were literally the last people there”, he told the BBC.

CHINESE AUTHORITIES DUG UP AND DESTROYED COFFINS DUE TO A BURIAL BAN

coffinsCoffins being smashed and locals lying in funerary boxes in an attempt to keep them – this is not some far-fetched horror, but a real-life drama unfolding in a Chinese province that is trying to enforce a ‘cremation only’ rule.

The drastic measures were introduced in several counties in southeastern Jiangxi province earlier this year. By September 1, local authorities aim to have made cremation the only approved method of disposing of bodies. Officials explain that the rule is the only way to save land in a province with over 45 million residents.

Photos and videos on social media show the “zero burial” policy in full swing – officials are seen entering villages, confiscating coffins that people have prepared from their homes. The coffins are then piled up and smashed by excavators.

Locals there don’t seem ready to give up traditional practices easily, however. Some were trying to stop the destruction by climbing inside coffins, but were pulled out by force. Some poor households have spent their whole lives saving up to buy coffins for their family, the South China Morning Post reported.
