cowUniversity of Missouri students were stunned when a towering dairy cow appeared on campus to make a cameo in a graduation photo shoot.

The Columbia Missourian reports that senior animal sciences major Massimo Montalbano brought the 3-year-old cow, named Amelia, to campus on Thursday to join his commencement photo shoot.

Montalbano worked with cattle throughout his undergraduate studies with the university’s Foremost Dairy Research Center.

Montalbano initially presented the idea to Jim Spain, the vice provost for undergraduate studies. Spain referred Montalbano to the university’s operations department, which ultimately approved the request.

Spain says it’s not the first time a student has asked him to bring a cow to campus. But it was still a rare sight to unsuspecting bystanders.

preacherA Missouri poacher has been ordered to repeatedly watch the movie “Bambi” as part of his sentence in a scheme to illegally kill hundreds of deer.

David Berry Jr. was ordered to watch the Disney classic at least once a month during his year-long jail sentence in what conservation agents have called one of the largest deer poaching cases in state history, the Springfield News-Leader reports.

“The deer were trophy bucks taken illegally, mostly at night, for their heads, leaving the bodies of the deer to waste,” said Don Trotter, the prosecuting attorney in Lawrence County.

Berry, his father, two brothers and another man who helped them had their hunting, fishing and trapping privileges revoked temporarily or permanently. The men have paid a combined $51,000 in fines and court costs — but the judge ordered a special addition to Berry’s sentence for illegally taking wildlife.

Court records show he was ordered by Lawrence County Judge Robert George to “view the Walt Disney movie Bambi, with the first viewing being on or before December 23, 2018, and at least one such viewing each month thereafter” while at the county jail.

Berry was also sentenced to 120 days in jail in nearby Barton County for a firearms probation violation.

inmateA jail inmate who escaped from authorities and tried hitchhiking along a highway didn’t enjoy freedom for long because the motorist he flagged down was a law enforcement officer.

Greenup County Jailer Mike Worthington told The Independent that 31-year-old Allen Lewis was being transported on Tuesday to face charges in another county when he told the officer his handcuffs were too tight. The officer pulled over and Worthington said after one handcuff was released, the two struggled and Lewis got free.

The jailer says Lewis made it to a nearby highway and tried to flag down passing cars for a ride. Worthington says the person who stopped was a campus officer at Morehead State University who saw handcuffs hanging off one wrist. Worthington says Lewis was taken back to jail and now faces an escape charge.

ringA Texas woman was reunited with her Texas A&M University ring more than 50 years after she lost it in Colorado.

Judy Lavois said she and her husband, who gave her the sweetheart ring, were playing in the snow in Colorado five decades ago when the ring came off her finger.

“I was pregnant with my second child and my husband gave it to me so I would have a boy,” Lavois told KTRK-TV. “And I did. I had a boy for him.”

Lavois said she had long since given up hope of seeing the ring again when she was contacted by a man named Jerry.

Jerry told Lavois that a family member had found the ring while vacationing in Colorado and he was able to track her down online.

“He’s an Aggie. He found me and brought it to me from San Antonio,” Lavois said.

Lavois said she met Jerry for lunch and was reunited with the ring.

“I’m going to wear it on a finger that will not fall off,” Lavois said.

tinyIt shouldn’t be hard to spot the property stolen from St. Louis resident Meghan Panu.

She’s looking for a 12-foot-tall tiny home that was stolen sometime Saturday.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Panu spent the past two years and about $20,000 working on the 20-foot cedar home.

The house was parked outside Refab, a popular spot for home remodeling supplies, when it was taken. Panu says she’s gone through surveillance cameras from nearby businesses to try and spot the thief.

Panu, a recent graduate of Webster University, planned to finish the interior and move in this spring.

Some Facebook posts reported seeing the house being pulled by a pickup truck on Interstate 70 west of St. Louis.

hotAn escaped inmate is back in custody after being found soaking in a hot tub at an Ohio senior living community, still wearing her yellow jail outfit.

The Pike County Sheriff’s Office says the 34-year-old woman fled while being booked on drug-possession charges Tuesday. She was captured by the sheriff and the local police chief several hours later when a 911 caller reported the woman sitting in the hot tub at a senior community’s activity center in Waverly, roughly 60 miles (97 kilometers) south of Columbus.

Authorities haven’t explained how or why the woman ended up there. A message seeking further comment was left Wednesday for the sheriff.

His office says the woman is being charged with felony escape in addition to the initial charges for alleged heroin possession.

The video, filmed during a parade at the Disneyland resort in Anaheim, shows Santa Claus riding in on a sleigh situated atop a float.

The sleigh abruptly lurches forward, spilling Santa and his bag of gifts out of the passenger area.

“At first we thought it was part of the show then we realized Santa was being held by a chain that was keeping him from falling to the ground,” the filmer wrote. “Everyone was stunned and confused. He was hanging there for a few minutes. Finally, he came down and waved to everyone laughing with his traditional, ‘Ho, ho, ho!’”  Video

Engineer uses glitter and fart smell to punish package thieves

fartA former NASA engineer revealed he spent six months perfecting a booby-trapped bait package that he has been using to cover porch pirates in glitter.

Mark Rober said in a YouTube video that he was inspired to take matters into his own hands earlier this year when an Amazon package was stolen from his porch and police told him they didn’t have time to investigate the theft.

“If you’ve ever been a situation like this, you just feel violated,” Rober says in the video. “I just felt like something needs to be done to take a stand against dishonest punks like this.”

The video shows how Rober spent six months designing a bait package booby-trapped so that anyone who opens it will be covered in glitter and subjected to an artificial fart smell.

Rober left the packages on some friends’ porches to bait thieves, and the resulting instant karma was captured on video by phones hidden inside the boxes, which Rober said were quickly abandoned by the thieves once the traps were discovered.

“So the moral of the story is: just don’t take other people’s stuff. Not only is not cool, but on the plus side, you’ll never find yourself in this situation,” Rober says.

ID PhotoInvestigators allege that Anthony Whitfield, 55, swiped nearly $3000 in alcohol during eight separate thefts over the past two months. Whitfield victimized Walmart, Walgreens, and Publix stores in the St. Petersburg area.

Whitfield, seen above, would stuff the liquor bottles down his pants and then depart the retailers “with a limp that was not present upon entering,” one investigator noted.

On November 23, Whitfield walked out of a Walmart with 11 bottles of Jack Daniels whiskey (retail value: $321.67) hidden in his pants. Four days later, Whitfield limped out of a Walgreens with four bottles of Jack Daniels, two bottles of Crown Royal, two bottles of Jameson, and a bottle of  Baileys Irish Cream in his pants.

In late-November, Whitfield returned to Walmart and stole a whopping $706.19 worth of liquor (though a criminal complaint does not list the bottles jammed into his trousers that evening).

When presented with assorted store surveillance footage, Whitfield reportedly identified himself as the thief recordred in the act. Facing multiple felony theft charges, Whitfield is being held in the Pinellas County jail in lieu of $40,000 bond.

Whitfield, a St. Petersburg resident, appears destined to return to state prison, where he spent more than 21 years in custody since 1979. His rap sheet includes a variety of felony convictions for crimes like robbery, sexual battery, narcotics possession, and grand theft.

‘Hi-tech robot’ on Russian state TV turns out to be a fraud

hiA “hi-tech” robot shown off on Russian state TV for his abilities to walk, talk and dance turned out to be a man in a nearly $4,000 costume.

A reporter on Russia-24 lauded the state-of-the-art “Robot Boris” during coverage of a robotics forum for kids Wednesday, boasting that he’s “already learned to dance and he’s not that bad,” The Guardian UK reported.

“I know mathematics well, but I also want to learn to draw,” Boris said in a robotic-sounding voice, before breaking into a dance to a song by the Russian band Little Big.

But eagle-eyed bloggers questioned the nuts and bolts of the performance.

The Russian website TJournal listed a series of queries about the ersatz robot’s presentation, including why he made so many “unnecessary movements” and where his external sensors were.

Later, photographs emerged showing the very obvious neckline of the person inside the suit — proving the robot wasn’t actually a feat of artificial intelligence.

Boris turned out to be an “Alyosha the Robot” costume made by the company Show Robots that costs around $3,700 and is equipped with a microphone and tablet display.

The organizers of the annual Proyektoria forum maintained that they weren’t trying to pass off the robot as real.

A journalist for the state-owned news channel denied trying to mislead viewers, saying he was sure that people would know it was a costume, like Santa Claus, and that the project was created for children, the Telegraph UK reported.

breathKhai Ho, 38-year-old self-described breatharian from Birkenhead, in the UK, claims he can last up to three months at a time on only 100 calories per week, surviving only on air, sunlight and the occasional mint leaves.

Ho, who works as a pizza deliveryman, claims that he has never taken much interest in food, constantly refusing his mother’s meals as a child, but only started giving up food completely over long periods of time four years ago, with the help of Hindu meditation.

He says can last up to three months without consuming any kind of food, apart from some mint leaves to help with bitter taste in his mouth, and drinking water only rarely, sometimes just once per week. Apparently, meditation helps him absorb all the nutrients he needs from thin air and sunlight.

The 38-year-old breathrian said that before turning to meditation, he would eat normal food once every three or four days, but now doesn’t need to do that because he gets necessary nutrients from sunlight and can even absorb moisture from the air around him. He admits that most people think his crazy for fasting for months at a time, but claims that some consider him “incredible at the same time.

indianMore than 30 Indian passengers were injured, some of them suffered nose and ear bleeding after the pilots “forgot” to activate the regulation of air pressure inside the aircraft.

The jet airways 9W697 flight was going from Mumbai to Jaipur, returned shortly after take-off.

The Boeing 737, which was carrying 166 passengers, landed safely.

The aviation ministry said the cockpit crew had been taken off duty pending an investigation.

Lalit Gupta, a senior official of India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), told the Hindustan Times newspaper that the crew had forgotten to select a switch to maintain cabin pressure.

Jet Airways said in a statement that Thursday morning’s flight had turned back “due to loss in cabin pressure” and “regretted” the inconvenience caused to its passengers.

“The B737 aircraft, with 166 guests and 5 crew landed normally in Mumbai. All guests were deplaned safely and taken to the terminal. First aid was administered to few guests who complained of ear pain, bleeding nose etc,” the statement said.

escapeThey got into the Lucardo Escape Rooms in the early hours of yesterday, smashing through three doors before stealing cash and causing extensive damage. Director Ian Pownall said: ‘They were opening every drawer in there looking for cash. They couldn’t get through the locks so they had a drill and were unscrewing panels off their hinges.

‘It’s as if they thought it was a real bank. But obviously there was inside them just puzzles.

‘Maybe they hadn’t been in an escape room before or didn’t know what it was, but they looked completely bemused. There’s certainly an irony to it.’

Escape Rooms involve participants using their wits to solve a series of puzzles to get a code to get out of a themed room. They raided the premises in Manchester city centre but were caught on more than 50 different CCTV cameras. At one point they took a can of coke but left it part-drunk so police hope to be able to get their DNA.

fingerA man is suing after he says one of his pinky fingers was caught in an airline armrest mechanism for nearly an hour during a flight to Los Angeles.

City News Service reports Stephen Keys has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court against both American Airlines Inc. and SkyWest Airlines Inc., alleging negligence.

A representative for American, which has a flying agreement with SkyWest, referred all comment to SkyWest, which said, “We worked with our partner American to reach out to Mr. Keys regarding his bruised finger and look forward to swiftly resolving this matter. Due to the ongoing litigation, we cannot comment further.”

The complaint says the injury to his finger left Keys unable to perform such previously routine tasks as driving and playing with his children. It says Keys experienced weeks of intense pain and severe emotional distress.
