burnedCoastguard received an alert to its operations centre about a gas explosion aboard a boat near Ocean Beach, Motuihe Island, yesterday at 3pm.

The man, in his 60s, was seriously injured with burns to his face and hands after trying to trace a gas leak with a naked flame.

Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter (AWRH) intensive care paramedic Chris Deacon said the man was okay despite the explosion and was nursing mostly superficial wounds.

“He smelt gas and confirmed that there was gas by lighting a match. Which is a very tried and true method of finding gas. Unfortunately, it is not a very good method.”

“He jumped straight into the water. He cooled the burns immediately, which is the right thing to do. He lost quite a bit of hair, he lost his eyebrows and eyelashes.”

volvoPolice in Norway said a teenager who tried to steal a car from a dealership ended up calling police when he found himself locked inside the vehicle.

Trondelag Police tweeted the 17-year-old called police just before 8 a.m. Monday and told officers he was trapped inside a car he had attempted to steal from a Volvo dealership.

Ebbe Kimo of the Trondelag Police said the teen was familiar with local police from previous petty crime arrests.

“He knows us quite well and clearly thought it would be OK to call us for help. A bit like calling a friend, really,” Kimo told Norwegian state broadcaster NRK.

Kimo told TV2 the teenager was “perhaps not the most knowledgeable car thief.”

“On his previous attempts, he was at least able to get out of the car,” he said.

foxA London family called animal rescuers when they came down for breakfast and discovered a fox sleeping on their microwave.

Kim Fryer said her daughter was the first one to spot the fox sleeping in the kitchen of their Mitcham district home about 7 a.m. Dec. 15.

“My daughter found him at 7 am and called up to me. I came down and spotted this little fox curled up on top of the microwave!” she said.

“I have five cats and a dog so obviously I have a cat flap. He must have crawled under the gate and through the cat flap!” Fryer said.

RSPCA Inspector Phil Norman responded to the home and took the Putney Animal Hospital for examination.

He had got in through the cat flap and found a nice warm spot to sleep in. He was quite happy to be brought in to the hospital for a health check but was understandably not keen on being in a cage.

“Fortunately he was quite healthy with a beautiful fluffy coat, so after a thorough check over he was released back to the area he was found in by one of the hospital staff.

rollSnake catchers was called to the Redlands home on Sunday night to remove the slithery reptile from the bathroom.

The juvenile python has snuck into the toilet roll holder and found a comfy spot wrapped inside a roll.

Elite Snake Catching Brisbane’s Stewart Lalor said he can remove as many as 12 snakes in a day.

“Everywhere you think a snake could go they will end up,” Mr Lalor said.

“Wherever there are possums you will have pythons.”

But he said pythons are “pretty harmless” and if people did not try to pick them up, they would not get bitten.

Japan keeps inventing ways to stop babies from crying in public

japanIn a country where public displeasure at crying babies is the norm, Japanese companies keep coming up with new ways to keep them quiet.

Carmaker Honda is the newest company to have a go at that, inventing a plush toy car called a Sound Sitter that allegedly mimics the sound that babies hear in the womb, which is apparently at a similar frequency to a car engine.

The company tested over 30 different of its car models, and found that the NSX model, launched in 2016, was the most soothing for babies.

Honda said that 11 out of 12 babies were soothed by the sound of the engine, which can be activated via a smartphone.

Rent-a-camel? Animals see bump in appearance requests for the holidays

camelReindeer have a famously hectic schedule at this time of year – but they aren’t the only in-demand animal: camels also face a long, though less celebrated, slog, on the festive commercial circuits of America.

The animals, known for having humps, are popular for nativity recreations – although scholars are divided as to whether camels were present at the birth of Jesus – and all round high jinks.

Despite the busy schedule, there’s no risk of the camels getting the proverbial hump, according to animal owner Jan Marchezak, who runs Barnyard Petting Zoo and Pony Rides LLC.

“They’re like a two-year-old who never grew up,” Marchezak said.

“They love the attention,” she said.

Marchezak, who is based in Washington county, Pennsylvania, owns nine camels. Two are fully-grown – they can weigh up to 1,500lbs – and she has seven calves. Although the camels are popular year round– Marchezak said people hire them to be petted at birthday parties – there is a significant peak around Christmas.

“We do lots and lots of churches,” Marchezak said. “We usually run out of camels before we run out of churches.”

aloneInvestigators charge that Natalee Kahl, 23, left the children–ages five, three, and one–alone around 10 PM in the family’s apartment in Coralville, an Iowa City suburb.

Police were dispatched to the residence after one of the children called 911 to report that she needed help watching videos online. Cops estimated that Kahl left the children by themselves for about 40 minutes.

Kahl returned to the home while officers were inside the residence with her children. Kahl reportedly “admitted to leaving the house to go get her boyfriend from a neighbor’s house” and that her offspring “would not be able to take care of themselves” in case of an emergency.

Kahl was arrested on three counts of misdemeanor child endangerment. She also faces a possession of drug paraphernalia rap after cops found a glass pipe with marijuana residue in the home.

Kahl was released this morning from the Johnson County jail after being booked into custody yesterday evening.

Kids Left Home Alone Watching “Home Alone”

homeAn Indiana mother left her two young boys home alone watching “Home Alone” when she went to work, a parenting miscue that resulted in her arrest on child neglect charges.

Acting on a tip, police went to a residence in Muncie Tuesday afternoon and found the children–ages seven and four–by themselves inside the home. When cops knocked, the older boy exclaimed, “It’s the police!”

The children, however, did not initially open the door. The older boy called an aunt, who responded to the home and convinced the child to let officers inside.

“The children were on the couch watching ‘Home Alone,’” according to a Muncie Police Department report.

A police investigation determined that Taylor Cumings, 25, had left her children in the residence without supervision (but with the 1990 comedy starring Macaulay Culkin playing). As reported by The Star Press, Cumings told police that she kept her older son out of school to watch the younger child, who had a fever.

Cumings said that she left for her job around 7 AM, adding that she was unable to find someone to watch her boys. A cop noted that Cumings admitted she “had done it before but almost always stays” with her children or has a babysitter.
