Fast-food workers plan acts of civil disobedience

Posted By Staff

Date: September 2nd, 2014

fastNEW YORK – McDonald’s, Wendy’s and other fast-food restaurants are expected to be targeted with acts of civil disobedience that could lead to arrests Thursday as labor organizers escalate their campaign to unionize the industry’s workers.

Kendall Fells, an organizing director for Fast Food Forward, said in an interview that workers in a couple of dozen cities were trained to peacefully engage in civil disobedience ahead of this week’s planned protests.

Fells declined to say what exactly is in store for the protests in around 150 U.S. cities. But workers involved in the movement recently cited sit-ins as an example of strategies they could use to intensify their push for higher pay and unionization. Past protests have targeted a couple of restaurants in each city.  More

600-plus criminal illegal immigrants were released amid 2013 budget cuts

Posted By Staff

Date: August 12th, 2014

releasedWashington DC – More than 600 illegal immigrants with criminal convictions were released by federal authorities in early 2013 in advance of the “sequester” budget cuts, according to a government watchdog report obtained by FoxNews.com.

The report by the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General, expected to be released on Tuesday, showed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement released “criminal aliens” from jails all over the country as part of a wave of releases in February 2013.

The agency came under fire at the time for the decision, which critics described as politically motivated and dangerous.

The report noted that many of the illegal immigrants were required by law to be held. Adding to the confusion, ICE leaders did not tell local field offices to track the releases. When they started asking questions, officers had trouble providing the information.  More

Feds say no end in sight for policy of dumping, abandoning illegal immigrants in Arizona

Posted By Staff

Date: June 7th, 2014

dumpArizona –  Gov. Jan Brewer said Friday she is “disturbed and outraged” after she was informed by federal officials that not only has the government been shipping illegal immigrants out of Texas and “dumping” them in her state, it has no plans to stop.

Federal officials told Brewer Friday that the practice will continue for the foreseeable future, and this weekend more than 1,000 illegal immigrant children will be “dumped” in Arizona. Adults and family units will also arrive, though Brewer was not told how many, her office said.

Reports first surfaced last week that scores of illegal immigrants in Texas were being flown, bused and then abandoned out of state in Arizona and elsewhere.  After learning of the practice, Brewer sent a scathing letter to the president on Monday posing a string of questions about the policy. Brewer said Friday what little she has learned since then has made her even more concerned.  More

37 VA whistle-blowers claim retaliation

Posted By Staff

Date: June 6th, 2014

whistleWashington DC – Dozens of Veterans Affairs workers who have come forward with stories of mismanagement and patient abuse say they have faced retaliation within the scandal-scarred agency, according to federal investigators.

In one case, a VA employee with a spotless record over two decades was suspended after reporting patients had been inappropriately restrained, according to one of 37 such complaints filed with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel (OSC).

In another case, an employee claimed to have been demoted after disclosing alleged mishandling of patient care funds. The employee was temporarily reassigned and an investigation is still ongoing, OSC officials said.

The complaints, which involved VA facilities in 19 states, appear to show a culture that discourages whistle-bowing, said officials at the OSC, which is probing the claims.  More   VA acting chief says 18 vets left off waiting list have died

Taxpayers paid $5.7 million for global warming games – made up voicemails

Posted By Staff

Date: May 24th, 2014

nsfWashington DC – Taxpayers paid more than $5 million to create climate change games, including voicemails from the future warning that “neo-luddites” will kill global warming enthusiasts by 2035.

Columbia University’s Climate Center has received $5.7 million from the National Science Foundation for the university’s “PoLAR Climate Change Education Partnership,” to “engage adult learners and inform public understanding and response to climate change.”

Based on the theory that games “motivate exploration and learning of complex material,” the school created “Future Coast,” a website that features hundreds of made up voicemails painting a dire picture of the future as a result of climate change.  More

Doctor claims patients on VA waiting list committed suicide

Posted By Staff

Date: May 19th, 2014

va huntA West Virginia doctor is coming forward with new allegations against the Department of Veterans Affairs, claiming that she too was told to put patients seeking treatment off for months on end — and that at least two of them committed suicide.

The claims add to the mounting controversy surrounding the VA, and allegations in several states that workers were concealing information about the long wait times veterans encountered. VA Secretary Eric Shinseki testified last week before Congress on the scandal, but so far has resisted calls for his resignation.

Russia to ban US from using Space Station over Ukraine sanctions

Posted By Staff

Date: May 14th, 2014

spaceRussia is to deny the US future use of the International Space Station beyond 2020 and will also bar its rocket engines from launching US military satellites as it hits back at American sanctions imposed over Ukraine   crisis.

Russia’s deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin announced a series of punitive measures on Tuesday against the US in response to sanctions imposed after Russia annexed Crimea.

The two countries have long cooperated closely on space exploration despite their clashes in foreign policy.

The Space Station is manned by both American and Russian crew, but the only way to reach it is by using Russia’s Soyuz spacecraft.  More

Boy punished at school for refusing to stand for Pledge of Allegiance

Posted By Staff

Date: May 9th, 2014

masonNEEDVILLE, Texas – Mason Michalec says he loves his country but just not the government.

“I’m really tired of our government taking advantage of us,” said Michalec.

“I don’t agree with the NSA spying on us.  And I don’t agree with any of those Internet laws.”

That’s why he’s taken a pledge of sorts to not say the Pledge of Allegiance with classmates.

“I’ve basically said it from the time I was in kindergarten to earlier this year and that’s when I decided I was done saying it.”  More

One out of every two acres in the west owned by the Federal Government

Posted By Staff

Date: May 5th, 2014

blmWashington DC – How much land does the federal government own? A 2012 Congressional Research  Survey said the federal government owns about 640 million acres, or 28 percent  of the nation’s land mass. Roughly 90 percent of that property is in the  West.

Put another way, one out of every two acres in the West is federally owned.  In Nevada, the figure is 81.1 percent; in Alaska, 61.8 percent; in Utah, 66.5  percent; in Oregon, 53 percent. In Connecticut and Iowa, the federal government  owns 0.3 percent of the land.

“The federal estate is larger than France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain and  the United Kingdom combined,” said Robert Gordon, a senior adviser for the  Heritage Foundation.

“It is too big and was never intended to be preserved as  one big park, but the left is strangling use of it and with it, rural  America.”  More

IRS seizes innocent Americans’ assets

Posted By Staff

Date: May 2nd, 2014

irs thiefMichigan – Earnest moralists lament Americans’ distrust of government. What really is regrettable is that government does much to earn distrust, as Terry Dehko, 70, and his daughter Sandy Thomas, 41, understand.

Terry, who came to Michigan from Iraq in 1970, soon did what immigrants often do: He went into business, buying Schott’s Supermarket in Fraser, Mich., where he still works six days a week.

The Internal Revenue Service, a tentacle of a government that spent $3.5 trillion in 2013, tried to steal more than $35,000 from Terry and Sandy that year.

Sandy, a mother of four, has a master’s degree in urban planning but has worked in the store off and on since she was 12. She remembers, “They just walked into the store” and announced that they had emptied the store’s bank account.

The IRS agents believed, or pretended to believe, that Terry and Sandy were or conceivably could be — which is sufficient for the IRS — conducting a criminal enterprise when not selling groceries.  More

The Long History of BLM’s Aggressive Cattle Seizures

Posted By Staff

Date: April 30th, 2014

chiefNevada – Every month, Raymond Yowell, the 84-year-old former chief of the Shoshone Indian Tribe in northeastern Nevada, has almost $200 garnished from his $1,150 Social Security check, and it all dates back to a 5:00am phone call on a Friday morning in 2002.

That morning, a government official from the Bureau of Land Management told him to come down to a seizure site where the 132 cattle he owned were about to be impounded.

When he arrived, men brandishing handguns told him he couldn’t get any closer than 250 yards from his cattle. He watched from a distance as the government loaded the livestock onto stock trailers.

Within a week, the cattle had been sold at a private auction – for what Yowell estimated to be a quarter of their market price. The proceeds belonged to BLM, officials told him, paying a portion of the grazing fees he suddenly owed. It wasn’t enough to cover the full debt, and BLM sent Yowell a bill for $180,000.

The story, ranchers in Nevada say, is far from unique. Beginning in the late 1980s, BLM adopted aggressive tactics in the West, leading to large-scale cattle seizures and a disruption of life for ranchers that had utilized public lands for decades prior.  More

EPA Faces Criticism for Energy Wasting Earth Day Tour

Posted By Staff

Date: April 22nd, 2014

Category: Government, Politics

Gina McCarthyThe Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility took a swipe at the EPA for sending bureaucrat Gina McCarthy on an greenhouse gas generating five city tour for Earth Day.

McCarthy will be participating in “various events to…focus on responsible steps to cut carbon pollution to slow the effects of climate change” in New York, Boston, Cleveland, Atlanta and Memphis.

Some activities on the tour were called into question.

Ruch noted that some events on McCarthy’s itinerary have questionable ties to promoting climate action, such as joining Energy Secretary Moniz to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Tuesday’s Red Sox vs. Yankees baseball game at Boston’s Fenway Park.  More

Fort Hood shooting repeat renews calls for ending gun restrictions on base

Posted By Staff

Date: April 3rd, 2014

arm militaryTexas – The fatal shooting Wednesday at Fort Hood, the second in less than five years, has renewed calls for Congress and the Defense Department to end restrictions on servicemembers carrying weapons on post.

According to the Army, the gunman in Wednesday’s shooting was carrying a handgun that was not registered at Fort Hood. He was able to kill three before killing himself, and wound 16.

Lawmakers, as well as survivors of the 2009 shooting, claim he could have been stopped sooner if others on base had their weapons by their side.

“When our soldiers are unarmed, they will find themselves in a situation like yesterday and in 2009,” Sgt. Howard Ray, a survivor of the 2009 mass shooting in which 13 people were killed, told Fox News.  More
