calCalifornians may expect the earth to move, but a new study of the San Andreas Fault suggests that the LA area is overdue for a Big One.

The study by the US Geological Survey of a section of the fault in the Grapevine area found that major quakes strike there on average once every 100 years—and the last one hit 160 years ago, per a USGS release.

Only two people were killed in the old quake, but a similar one today would surely have a much higher toll, while also damaging aqueducts, the electric grid, and highways.  More

youthScientists may be one step closer to achieving the ‘fountain of youth’ in humans.

A drug has previously been found to help elderly mice regrow their hair, run faster and live for longer.

It works by removing cells in skin tissue that naturally accumulate as the rodents grow older.

But the senescent cells – which are unable to reproduce the

deadA groundbreaking trial to see if it is possible to regenerate the brains of dead people, has won approval from health watchdogs.

A biotech company in the US has been granted ethical permission to recruit 20 patients who have been declared clinically dead from a traumatic brain injury, to test whether parts of their central nervous system can be brought back to life.

Scientists will use a combination of therapies, which include injecting the brain with stem cells and a cocktail of peptides, as well as deploying lasers and nerve stimulation techniques which have been shown to bring patients out of comas.   More

1 in 10 chance Yellowstone super-volcano will ‘kill millions’

Posted By Staff

Date: January 6th, 2016

yellowInstances of volcanic eruptions are their highest for 300 years and scientists fear a major one that could kill millions and devastate the planet is a real possibility.

Experts at the European Science Foundation said volcanoes – especially super-volcanoes like the one at Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, which has a caldera measuring 34 by 45 miles (55 by 72 km) – pose more threat to Earth and the survival of humans than asteroids, earthquakes, nuclear war and global warming.

There are few real contingency plans in place to deal with the ticking time bomb, which they conclude is likely to go off within the next 80 years.

The world’s most dangerous active volcanoes include Yellowstone, Mount Vesuvius in Campagnia, Italy, and Popocatépetl i near Mexico City.  More

Scientists explain exactly how death feels

psychoSlasher films are a lot of fun to watch. But what exactly would it feel like to get stuck in one?

Scientists have explored many of the things that happen to the body and the mind as it approaches death — and while much of it still remains mysterious, the experience can be understood through the various chemical reactions and events that are happening in the brain.

Just in time for Halloween, a new video from the American Chemical Society explores exactly what would be happening inside someone’s body as they are being chased by a murderer in a slasher film.  More

My wife volunteered for a one-way mission to Mars

Posted By Staff

Date: August 3rd, 2015

marsVirginia – A Virginia man has opened up about what it’s like having a wife who volunteered to be part of the controversial Mars One mission – and the fact that, in just a few years, he and his sons are expected to say goodbye to her forever.

Jason Stanford refers to himself as an ‘astronaut wife’, because his actual wife and stepmother to his two sons, Sonia Van Meter, 36, was one of the people chosen for the Mars One Project, a privately-funded one-way mission which hopes to establish a permanent human colony on the red planet.

The first Mars One mission is slated to launch in 2026 – amid widespread criticism from scientists and space luminaries – with four people to touch down, and then another four every two years from there.  More

Strange Alien Worm with its mouth in the middle of its belly invades United States

Category: Science

wormA bizarre invasive worm with its mouth in the middle of its belly has been found in the United States for the first time, according to new research.

The New Guinea flatworm (Platydemus manokwari) is only a couple of millimeters thick but grows to be up to 2.5 inches (65 millimeters) long.

As its name suggests, the worm is a New Guinea native, but it has been spreading across the globe, hitching rides on exotic plants and in soil.

The worm wraps itself around snails and ingests them with a mouthlike structure on its underside.

The flatworm had previously been detected in the wild in 15 countries, as well as in a greenhouse in France, but this is the first time it’s been found in North America.  More

saucerMiami – High waves forced NASA to postpone until Thursday the first test of the largest parachute ever deployed, during a flying saucer launch that will try out new technologies for landing on Mars.

If conditions improve, the test flight of the flying saucer, known as the Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator, will be broadcast live on NASA’s website beginning at 1:30 pm (1730 GMT) on Thursday.

“The ocean wave height continues to be an issue for the crew that would recover the vehicle and its data after splashdown,” NASA said after the postponement of Wednesday’s planned attempt.

A bid on Tuesday was also canceled because of ocean conditions.  More
