Rogue Microwave Ovens Are the Culprits Behind Mysterious Radio Signals

radioFor years, astronomers had been puzzled by these brief but intense bursts of radio waves that in some ways appeared to be coming from deep space. There have been dozens of reported perytons, some dating back to the 1990s, and theories about the signals’ origin included ball lightning, aircraft, and components of the telescopes themselves.

But almost since the beginning, one thing has been clear about perytons: Despite mimicking a deep space signal, they’re produced by a source that’s somewhere near Earth. Astronomers knew this because perytons simultaneously show up in multiple viewing fields rather than arriving from a single point.

In this respect, perytons are very much unlike their cousins called fast radio bursts, highly energetic signals that truly appear to be coming from very, very far away and have no known origin.

If you open the microwave door before the timer goes off, the thing in the oven that produces microwaves – it’s called a magnetron – hasn’t had a chance to completely shut off. And so, the microwave oven is briefly transmitting radio waves into the open.  More

Hubble Telescope Captures A Smiley Face In Outer Space

face smileThe Hubble Space Telescope snapped a shot of galaxy cluster SDSS J1038+4849 in which the cluster appears to be looking back.

Two bright dots look like eyes, another like a nose, and curved lines of light create a mouth and the outline of a face.

Altogether, they create the impression of a happy face in the galaxy cluster.

In reality, the two “eyes” are each a distant galaxy, and the curved lines come from light that has been bent by gravity around the galaxy cluster — an effect known as gravitational lensing.  More

Birds could predict storms in advance

Posted By Staff

Date: December 19th, 2014

goldenA new study published in the journal Current Biology found that golden-winged warblers could predict extreme weather events, thanks to their low-frequency hearing.

A recent storm in eastern Tennessee led to 84 tornadoes and killed 35 people, but the golden-winged warblers left in time to fly to safety.

Researchers discovered the birds’ capabilities by accident — they were testing whether the warblers could carry geolocators on their backs.

Before the storm hit, the birds left Tennessee’s Cumberland Mountains, migrating an astonishing 400 miles to the Gulf of Mexico.  More

Stephen HawkingUK – The eminent British physicist Stephen Hawking warns that the development of intelligent machines could pose a major threat to humanity.

The famed scientist’s warnings about AI came in response to a question about his new voice system.

Hawking has a form of the progressive neurological disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease), and uses a voice synthesizer to communicate.

Recently, he has been using a new system that employs artificial intelligence.

Developed in part by the British company Swiftkey, the new system learns how Hawking thinks and suggests words he might want to use next, according to the BBC.  More

Scientists listen and wait for comet lander’s signals – Landed in the shade

Posted By Staff

Date: November 15th, 2014

shadeBERLIN – The head of the European comet mission says scientists were listening for signals from the Philae lander Saturday morning, but think it is unlikely they will establish any kind of communication soon.

Controllers at the European Space Agency on Friday ordered the lander to perform a maneuver intended to pull it out of a shadow on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko so that solar panels could recharge the depleted batteries.

“We don’t know if the charge will ever be high enough to operate the lander again,” Paolo Ferri, ESA’s head of mission operations, told The Associated Press.

On Thursday, Philae landed next to a cliff that largely blocked sunlight from reaching its solar panels.  More

First image of comet lander released

Posted By Staff

Date: November 12th, 2014

cometThe European Space Agency has released the first image of its Philae lander separating from the Rosetta mothership on its ambitious mission toward the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

The separation, which took place around 4 AM ET, marked the start of a 7-hour journey to the comet’s surface.

The Rosetta spacecraft and its Philae lander have been on a decade-long mission through the solar system to rendezvous with the comet.

If successful, Philae will be the first probe to land on a comet.

The comet, which is about 2.5 miles wide, travels at speeds up to 84,000 miles per hour.  More
