amAshley Madison, the infidelity-focused matchmaking site whose slogan is “Life is short. Have an affair,” was the target of a huge hack this weekend, and hackers are threatening to reveal data related to the accounts of millions of members.

The hack, which was reported by Krebs on Security, appears to have breached “sensitive internal data” from Avid Life Media (ALM), Ashley Madison’s Toronto-based parent company.

Smartphone ‘kill switch’ law takes effect in California

killCalifornia – Thieves, consider yourselves on notice: California is now smartphone “kill switch” territory.

The so-called software is designed to make stealing smartphones essentially pointless by allowing owners to remotely lock their device so no one can use it.

The technology, which includes Apple’s “Activation Lock” and Google’s “Device Protection,” has become a key selling point among phone manufacturers that offer peace of mind to protect customers’ information if a phone is stolen, and hopefully discourage thieves from stealing it in the first place.  More

dog watchChina – The 27-year-old son son of China’s richest man is causing quite a stir in Shanghai after posting photos of his dog wearing two gold Apple Watches with the caption,

“I have new watches! I’m supposed to have four watches since I have four long legs. But that seems too uncouth so I kept it down to two, which totally fits my status. Do you have one?”

The photos were uploaded to Chinese social media site where the heir maintains a page dedicated to his dog. The posts have recieved more than 6,000 comments so far – many of which are laced with outrage and jealousy.

Apple’s gold watches retail for between $10,000 and $17,000 per watch depending on specifications and currently have a 3 to 4 week wait time.  More

Flying car crashes during critical test

flyingA flying car has spectacularly crashed during a test flight by its inventor, likely showing that the idea is unlikely to take off in the near future.

Despite being the dream of many sci-fi fans, flying cars have repeatedly proved more difficult in practice.

And the crash — during last week’s test flight in Slovakia — is likely to dampen those dreams even more.

According to eyewitnesses, the plane appeared to have experienced problems and gone into a tailspin before it crashed into the ground. Its pilot used a parachute system built in to the car and made his way out safely.  More

Fukushima robot dead hours into mission inside reactor

robotJapan – Decommissioning work at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has suffered a setback after a robot sent in to a damaged reactor to locate melted fuel stalled hours into its mission and had to be abandoned.

The plant’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power, said the robot stopped moving on Friday during its first inspection of the containment vessel inside reactor No 1, one of the three reactors that suffered meltdown after the plant was struck by an earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

Tepco, which recently conceded that the technology for robots to retrieve the nuclear fuel had yet to be developed, said on Monday it would cut the cables to the stranded robot and postpone a similar inspection using a separate device.  More

How technology led to 12-year-old’s abduction … and rescue

Posted By Staff

Date: November 30th, 2014

technologyThe story of a 12-year-old girl’s kidnapping fuels concerns about the dangers of the Internet—even as it demonstrates how today’s devices can come to the rescue, Ars Technica reports.

The Baltimore-area girl, identified in court as Jane Doe, communicated with several men via Xbox Live and social media.

Earlier this month, she went missing, and a few days later, Microsoft produced a chilling transcript from one of her conversations with another contact, in which she said she was “going to live with some guy.”

She typed: “I’m scared he said he was gonna kidnap me.”

After she was found, she said she had been raped twice.  More

Scientists listen and wait for comet lander’s signals – Landed in the shade

Posted By Staff

Date: November 15th, 2014

shadeBERLIN – The head of the European comet mission says scientists were listening for signals from the Philae lander Saturday morning, but think it is unlikely they will establish any kind of communication soon.

Controllers at the European Space Agency on Friday ordered the lander to perform a maneuver intended to pull it out of a shadow on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko so that solar panels could recharge the depleted batteries.

“We don’t know if the charge will ever be high enough to operate the lander again,” Paolo Ferri, ESA’s head of mission operations, told The Associated Press.

On Thursday, Philae landed next to a cliff that largely blocked sunlight from reaching its solar panels.  More

First flying cars ready in two years

flyThe idea of a flying car might seem like something out of a science fiction novel, but it may soon become a reality.

All it’ll take is about $30 million in funding and some patience.

Terrafugia, a Woburn manufacturer of flying cars has been working on its vehicles for almost eight years.

The MIT-born company has been working on two kinds of cars: the Transition, which is scheduled to be released in mid-2016 and can fly at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour at up to 10,000 feet in the air; and the TF-X, a semi-autonomous plug-in hybrid vehicle which is currently in conceptual design phase and can take off and land vertically and can fly at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour.

The TF-X does not have a price tag yet and will take about 8 to 12 years before it’s a reality.  More

A 2,000-pound satellite may crash in your backyard Sunday night

Posted By Staff

Date: November 9th, 2013

Who do you sue if you’re hit by a satellite?

A defunct satellite from the European Space Agency the size of a Chevy Suburban is set to plunge to Earth somewhere between Sunday night and Monday afternoon — and experts say there’s no way to precisely determine where it will crash.

GOCE, or Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer, ran out of gas last month and has been steadily sinking towards the Earth.

As the planet rotates, the satellite whizzes over nearly every point on Earth.

Experts expect it to plunge harmlessly into the oceans that cover 70 percent of the surface of the planet.  Full Article   Interstate Batteries

Superfast rock-paper-scissors robot wins every time

Posted By Staff

Date: November 4th, 2013

Japan – A robot developed by Japanese scientists is so fast it can “win” the rock-paper-scissors game against a human every single time.

The Janken robot – named after the game’s Japanese name – is a faster version of one unveiled by University of Tokyo researchers in June 2012.

Version two completes its chosen hand shape almost at the same time as the human hand.

It uses high-speed recognition and reaction, rather than prediction.

Technically, the robot cheats because it reacts extremely quickly to what the human hand is doing rather than making a premeditated simultaneous action as the rules state.  Full Article   Omaha Steaks

T-Mobile to end grandfathered plans in November

Technology News by Percento Technologies

T-Mobile has decided to ax grandfathered plans and fit its current customers into its existing plans.

The company confirmed to Engadget on Tuesday that starting November 1, existing customers on its older plans will be moved into another option that has “similar or better features at a comparable price.”

T-Mobile didn’t say exactly how it goes about determining what’s best for individual customers.

T-Mobile’s confirmation of the change comes just after a commenter on the Howard Forums posted a letter they received from T-Mobile. The letter indicates that T-Mobile chose “the closest match” for the customer, which in this case, was its $45-per-month Select Value option.  Full Article
