IRS Worker Used Federal Credit Card For Personal Amazon Buys For Years

Maryland – Entrusted with a government credit card, an Internal Revenue Service worker allegedly used the plastic for a years-long Amazon.com shopping spree that netted her hundreds of items, including a chocolate fondue fountain; Bollywood movies; Pampers; Harlequin romance novels; Omaha Steaks; Apple Bottoms skinny jeans; mango body wash; and a Ginsu knife set.

Yetunde Oseni, 37, was named this month in a U.S. District Court felony complaint charging her with embezzling government funds.

Oseni has worked since 2000 as a secretary in an IRS office in Lanham, Maryland.

According to a court filing, Oseni was given a Citibank MasterCard for the purchase of office supplies for her business unit. Full Article

Businessman pays $398,500 for a pigeon

China – A Chinese businessman has paid a world record $398,500 for a Belgian pigeon, highlighting Asia’s huge and growing interest in racing birds.

The one-year-old award-winning pigeon named Bolt was bred by Belgian pigeon fancier Leo Heremans, a well-known name to pigeon enthusiasts, who sold his entire collection of 530 birds for 4.3 million euros at an auction over the weekend.

“You can compare it to artwork.

A painting made by Picasso is worth more than one made by an unknown artist.

It’s the same with this pigeon,” Nikolaas Gyselbrecht of pigeon auction site PIPA said on Tuesday. Full Article

Accused Fort Hood Shooter Paid $270K While Sitting in Prison

USA – Did you know that under the Military Code of Justice the U.S. Army can’t suspend pay for an employee who has been accused of a crime unless he is proven guilty?

And it’s the reason why Nidal Hasan, the accused Fort Hood shooter, has been paid more than $270,000 by the U.S. government since the Nov. 5, 2009, mass shooting that left 13 dead and 32 injured, NBC DFW reports.

“If Hasan had been a civilian defense department employee,” the report continues, “the Army could have suspended his pay after just seven days.”

And if you think it’s outrageous that Hassan has been receiving paychecks while he awaits trial, keep in mind many of the soldiers wounded by his alleged rampage are still fighting to get pay and medical benefits given to those wounded in combat. Full Article

Woman Rescued Off Mountain After Getting High On Mushrooms, Stripping Off Her Clothes

Colorado – The college student, 21, had to be rescued yesterday afternoon off a Colorado mountain after she ingested mushrooms, stripped off her clothes, and scuffled with two classmates with whom she had been hiking.

After receiving a 911 call that a female hiker was “high on mushrooms and in distress,” Boulder County Sheriff’s Office deputies and other assorted rescue personnel (35 in total) responded to Chautauqua Park.

Taylor Powers was located by a park ranger who discovered that the University of Colorado undergrad had “removed all of her clothing and was being restrained” by two male companions.

Rescuers had to handcuff the unruly Powers, who struggled as she was placed in a rescue basket. Full Article

High school seniors release 10,000 crickets into halls, banned from graduation

Kentucky – Punishment by the administration of East Carter High School in Grayson, Ky., is deemed too extreme by classmates, parents – and even a state senator.

But Principal Larry Kiser says the critters were expensive to clean up after.

High school seniors were banned from graduation after releasing 10,000 crickets into its halls as a prank.

East Carter High School in Grayson, Ky., stopped seven students from attending Saturday morning’s celebration because of the cost of the cleanup. Full Article

Man breaks into fortune teller’s home when love spell fails

MAGALLON, Spain – Police in Spain said they arrested a man accused of breaking into a fortune teller’s home to recover the $212,000 he paid for a love spell that didn’t work.

Investigators said Jose Laparra, former manager of the Club Deportivo Castellon soccer team, paid the sum to a Magallon fortune teller in exchange for casting a spell to bring his former lover back to him, thinkSPAIN reported Monday.

However, Laparra allegedly broke into the woman’s house when the spell didn’t work and demanded his money back. Full Article

Deputies: High school girl bit boyfriend when he refused sex

BRADENTON, Florida – A 19-year-old high school student has been arrested after authorities say she bit her boyfriend’s penis when he refused to have sex with her.

Manatee Sheriff’s Office said Krystle Harrison made several advances toward her boyfriend of three years and he rebuffed her.

According to an arrest report, she grabbed him and bit his genitals.

He left the house, but the arrest report says Harrison followed him and slapped and spit in his face.

The report says he declined medical treatment, which also included scratches on his chest. Full Article

China – In Leqing City, in China’s Zhejian Province, at around 6:00 a.m., a woman was using a public restroom when the toilet literally exploded.

The blast so was so powerful that it blew the exterior wall outward, injuring another woman who was walking by.

Amazingly, the woman inside was completely unharmed, protected by the room’s internal brick walls.

A local citizen speculated that the incident may have been caused by faulty electrical wires that sparked and thus ignited the methane gas that had filled up the stopped-up toilet. Full Article

Starbucks Diaper Change On Table Prompts Police Call

DENVER – One mom decided to change her child’s diaper out in the open at a Denver Starbucks and what happened next ended with a call to police.

Burgos noticed there was no changing table at the Denver Starbucks on the 7900 block of East 49th Avenue so she changed her son’s diaper in the seating area.

Alex Burgos says a Starbucks employee tossed his wife a rag and spoke to her in a “demeaning” tone.

“He said make sure to wipe the seat when you’re done,” he said. “They started talking amongst themselves and laughing about it.”

Burgos says his blood started boiling, hotter than the venti coffee with extra sugar he decided to pour on the floor. “And I said make sure you clean that,” Burgos said. Full Article

Father, 23, Arrested For Letting Daughter, 9, Drive Car

Ohio – A 23-year-old Ohio man is facing a child endangerment charge after allegedly allowing his nine-year-old daughter to drive the family car, a 1998 Honda that the child lost control of after “achieving excessive speed” and drove into a tree.

Jaron McGee was riding shotgun while his child was tooling around last night in the parking lot of Headlands State Park, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

“However the child lost control of the car after achieving excessive speed, and drove directly into the large tree,” investigators reported.

Before deputies arrived, the girl was driven from the scene of the accident by family members, who said she was not injured in the crash. Full Article

Airline mix-up sends couple to wrong side of the world

Ever had that fear of falling asleep after take-off and waking up to realize you are on the wrong flight?

Well, due to an airline mix-up, Sandy Valdivieso and her husband Triet Vo had exactly that nightmare experience.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the couple wanted to fly from Los Angeles to the African city of Dakar, Senegal, but ended up on a flight to Dhaka, Bangladesh, which is 6,900 miles away and on a completely different continent.

The two travelers, flying on Turkish Airlines, had a layover in Istanbul before making their connecting flight to what they thought would be Dakar.

After boarding their flight, they quickly fell asleep and several hours later woke up to see the inflight map showing the plane over the Middle East, headed the completely wrong direction. Full Article

Normand delivered an unforgettable version of America’s national anthem during a Memorial Cup round-robin game between the Halifax Mooseheads and the Portland Winterhawks in Saskatoon.

Driver plowed into dozens of people marching in a parade

DAMASCUS, Virginia – Authorities believe the driver who plowed into dozens of hikers marching in a Virginia mountain town parade suffered from a medical condition and did not cause the crash intentionally, an emergency official said Sunday.

Officials did not have a formal confirmation or any specifics on the condition, but based on the accounts of authorities and witnesses on the scene, they are confident the issue was medical, according to Pokey Harris, Washington County’s director of emergency management.

“There is no reason to believe this was intentional,” she said.

Taxes on some wealthy top 100 percent of income

France – More than 8,000 French households’ tax bills topped 100 percent of their income last year, the business newspaper Les Echos reported on Saturday, citing Finance Ministry data.

The newspaper said that the exceptionally high level of taxation was due to a one-off levy last year on 2011 incomes for households with assets of more than 1.3 million euros ($1.67 million).

Sheep attack hiker on Israel National Trail

HADEERA, Israel – A hiker was hospitalized after a sheep attacked him Saturday on the Israel National Trail, authorities said.

The attack occurred near Kfar Qara, south of Haifa, Ynetnews.com reported.

The hiker, a 56-year-old man, was conscious and was able to call for help on his cellphone.

Paramedics treated the hiker at the scene and he was then transported to the Hillel Yaffa Hospital in Hadeera.
