Brother’s house painted pink during honeymoon

SOUTHEND, England – A British man said he painted his honeymooning brother’s house pink with white spots in revenge for a similar prank six years ago.

Russell O’Rourke, 35, said his painted the Southend, England, house while his brother, Steve, 32, and his bride, Hayley, 31, were on their two-week honeymoon on the Greek island of Rhodes, The Mirror reported Wednesday.

Russell said Steve built a 4-foot-high brick wall across his driveway while Russell was on his own honeymoon six years ago.

“What you reap is what you sow,” Russell said.

“The neighbors were coming out asking what I was doing painting their house. I reckon there were hundreds of people stopping and taking pictures. Even the police were slowing down to take a look.” Full Article

Veterinary surgeons remove tiger’s basketball-sized hairball

CLEARWATER, Florida – It’s not unusual for a cat to get a hairball, but a 400-pound tiger needed help from veterinary surgeons in Florida when he couldn’t hack up a basketball-size hairball by himself.

The 17-year-old tiger named Ty underwent the procedure Wednesday at a veterinary center in the Tampa Bay area community of Clearwater.

Doctors said in a statement that they safely removed the 4-pound obstruction from Ty’s stomach.

The tiger, which is cared for by Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation in Seminole, was brought to veterinarians after not eating for nearly two weeks.

Doctors said they detected the hairball using a scope with a camera. Full Article

Three face federal charges for jumping on manatees, face jail

COCOA BEACH, Florida - Three men could face federal wildlife abuse charges after a video showed a man jumping onto two manatees in a South Florida canal, officials say.

The video, posted on Facebook and YouTube, was recorded a year ago in a Cocoa Beach neighborhood, The Orlando Sentinel reported Tuesday.

A man and two friends are shown in the video luring an adult manatee and a calf close to a dock with fresh water from a hose.

The adult manatee is jumped on by one of the men cannonball-style. The calf is almost hit too.

The manatees try to swim away as the men laugh and the diver swims back to the dock. Full Article

Man’s arm takes six years to heal, breaks day after final treatment

STOCKTON-ON-TEES, England – A British man whose broken arm took six years to mend said he broke it again the day after his final treatment when he tripped over his dog.

Tim Blackburn, 50, of Stockton-on-Tees, England, said he busted his right arm when he fell off a ladder in 2007 and doctors had to remove 4 inches of bone and attach a metal scaffold around the arm, The Sun reported Wednesday.

Blackburn said the arm was finally healed this month using a new ultrasound technique, but it snapped again the day after the final treatment when he tripped over Jackson, his 2-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier, and tumbled down the stairs. Full Article

Jimmy Shao keeps a log book of every 911 call he’s made.

So many that he boasts he’s probably set a world record.

FBI agent ends interview – shoots, kills man being questioned in Boston bombing probe

ORLANDO, Florida – An FBI agent in Orlando shot dead a man questioned in the Boston bombing investigation whom the agency says turned violent during an interview early Wednesday.

The suspect was identified by the FBI as Ibragim Todashev, 27, of Orlando.

FBI spokesman Paul Bresson said the agent involved in the shooting on Peregrine Avenue near Kirkman and Vineland roads, near Universal Orlando, acted on an imminent threat and shot Todashev during an interview.

A source told FOX 25 News in Boston that Todashev was being questioned by an FBI agent from Boston about an unsolved triple murder in Waltham, Mass.

The source said Todashev became violent during the interview and was shot by the agent. Full Article

FEMA uses ‘Waffle House index’ to take stock of Oklahoma tornado disaster

Oklahoma – When the main US federal emergency agency arrives at the scene of a disaster-hit area, one of the first places it turns to is the local Waffle House – and not just for its officials to grab a quick bite.

Craig Fugate, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, came up with the idea of the “Waffle House index” as an informal way of measuring the impact of a disaster.

The chain, which has a large number of branches in tornado-prone areas, has a robust emergency management plan.

The index has three levels.

If the local Waffle House is up and running, serving a full menu, a disaster is classed as green. If it is running with an emergency generator and serving only a limited menu, it is a yellow. If it is closed, badly damaged or totally destroyed, as during hurricane Katrina, it is a red.

But the Moore, Oklahoma, tornado was classed as a yellow on the Waffle House index because managers were hoping to get it up and running soon. Full Article

Bank robber wears green floor-length gown

Iowa – Stuart police are looking for someone who robbed a local bank while wearing a bright green dress, officials said.

Officers responded to a report of a bank robbery at First State Bank in Stuart around 3:45 p.m. Monday, authorities said.

The suspect handed the teller a note demanding money and the teller complied, police said.

The suspect fled and a witness later reported seeing the suspect climb into the trunk of a car parked in a nearby alley. Full Article

Plea deal for mom accused of faking sons’ war deaths

Florida – WBBH NBC News-2 in Fort Myers reports that Shirley Ann Duncan has agreed to a plea deal and will be on probation for three years and must pay back her victims — members of her church.

Duncan had told members of a Port Charlotte church that her three sons were killed in action in the Middle East wars — and her fourth injured son was not expected to live.

She later told the congregants that son died in October, according to a news release from the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.

When the church asked the 49-year-old North Port woman for documentation concerning the deaths, she presented a fraudulent letter supposedly from the Secretary of War and signed by Adjutant General J.A. Ulio, informing her that a son was killed Aug. 13, 2010, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives said that General died more than 50 years ago. Full Article

Couple get prison for keeping niece as sex slave

SAN DIEGO, California – A Southern California couple are headed to prison after pleading guilty to keeping a young niece in the United States illegally as a sex slave.

Inez Martinez Garcia, 44, was sentenced Monday to a 20-year prison term.

Her husband, Marcial Garcia Hernandez, 45, was given a 23-years-to-life sentence. Both pleaded guilty to multiple counts of abuse.

Prosecutors said the couple coerced a relative in Mexico to send their niece to the United States illegally to live with them at their Oceanside home.

The couple promised they would look after the girl, then 12, and make sure she went to school. Full Article

Ally got an email from a teacher on Wednesday saying that her daughter had been relentlessly teasing another student about her clothes for the last three weeks.

Illinois Lottery bounces $9,940 worth of winners’ checks

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois – Illinois Lottery Officials confirmed eight checks worth a total $9,940 bounced at the beginning of the month.

Officials said the checks issued to winners May 1 bounced because an employee forgot to approve the funds to U.S. Bank before the winners attempted to cash the checks, which ranged from $847 to $2,565, WLS-TV, Chicago, reported Tuesday.

Charles Cinquegrani, the winner of the $2,565, said he was shocked when the check bounced.

“They said the check you deposited is no good.

I said, ‘what?!’ I couldn’t believe it,” said Cinquegrani, who won the money from a Pick 4 ticket. Full Article

Maryland – Entrusted with a government credit card, an Internal Revenue Service worker allegedly used the plastic for a years-long Amazon.com shopping spree that netted her hundreds of items, including a chocolate fondue fountain; Bollywood movies; Pampers; Harlequin romance novels; Omaha Steaks; Apple Bottoms skinny jeans; mango body wash; and a Ginsu knife set.

Yetunde Oseni, 37, was named this month in a U.S. District Court felony complaint charging her with embezzling government funds.

Oseni has worked since 2000 as a secretary in an IRS office in Lanham, Maryland.

According to a court filing, Oseni was given a Citibank MasterCard for the purchase of office supplies for her business unit. Full Article

China – A Chinese businessman has paid a world record $398,500 for a Belgian pigeon, highlighting Asia’s huge and growing interest in racing birds.

The one-year-old award-winning pigeon named Bolt was bred by Belgian pigeon fancier Leo Heremans, a well-known name to pigeon enthusiasts, who sold his entire collection of 530 birds for 4.3 million euros at an auction over the weekend.

“You can compare it to artwork.

A painting made by Picasso is worth more than one made by an unknown artist.

USA – Did you know that under the Military Code of Justice the U.S. Army can’t suspend pay for an employee who has been accused of a crime unless he is proven guilty?

And it’s the reason why Nidal Hasan, the accused Fort Hood shooter, has been paid more than $270,000 by the U.S. government since the Nov. 5, 2009, mass shooting that left 13 dead and 32 injured, NBC DFW reports.

“If Hasan had been a civilian defense department employee,” the report continues, “the Army could have suspended his pay after just seven days.”

And if you think it’s outrageous that Hassan has been receiving paychecks while he awaits trial, keep in mind many of the soldiers wounded by his alleged rampage are still fighting to get pay and medical benefits given to those wounded in combat. Full Article

Woman Rescued Off Mountain After Getting High On Mushrooms, Stripping Off Her Clothes

Colorado – The college student, 21, had to be rescued yesterday afternoon off a Colorado mountain after she ingested mushrooms, stripped off her clothes, and scuffled with two classmates with whom she had been hiking.

After receiving a 911 call that a female hiker was “high on mushrooms and in distress,” Boulder County Sheriff’s Office deputies and other assorted rescue personnel (35 in total) responded to Chautauqua Park.

Taylor Powers was located by a park ranger who discovered that the University of Colorado undergrad had “removed all of her clothing and was being restrained” by two male companions.

Rescuers had to handcuff the unruly Powers, who struggled as she was placed in a rescue basket. Full Article

Kentucky – Punishment by the administration of East Carter High School in Grayson, Ky., is deemed too extreme by classmates, parents – and even a state senator.

But Principal Larry Kiser says the critters were expensive to clean up after.

High school seniors were banned from graduation after releasing 10,000 crickets into its halls as a prank.
