Cockroaches quickly lose sweet tooth to survive

NEW YORK – For decades, people have been getting rid of cockroaches by setting out bait mixed with poison.

But in the late 1980s, in an apartment test kitchen in Florida, something went very wrong.

A killer product stopped working.

Cockroach populations there kept rising.

Mystified researchers tested and discarded theory after theory until they finally hit on the explanation: In a remarkably rapid display of evolution at work, many of the cockroaches had lost their sweet tooth, rejecting the corn syrup meant to attract them.

In as little as five years, the sugar-rejecting trait had become so widespread that the bait had been rendered useless. Full Article

Donkeys pulled man off his motorcycle, trampled him to death

Budapest – Two donkeys are under careful watch after being suspected of mauling a 65-year-old Hungarian man, iScienceTimes reported.

Sandor Horvath, a retired firefighter, was riding his motorcycle near Budapest when the donkeys pulled him off, bit him and trampled him to death. Police said Horvath was likely dragged more than 150 feet before he died.

His injuries were so brutal that investigators initially thought he had been attacked by wolves, according to the Huffington Post.

His body was taken to the medical examiner for autopsy. His cause of death will determine the fate of the donkeys.

It is not known whether the man had any interaction with the donkeys beforehand, or whether the donkeys have any history of aggressive behavior. Full Article

Police Gear Up For ‘Urban Beach Week’

MIAMI BEACH, Florida – Sun, sand, music and heightened security pretty much sums up Memorial Day Weekend on South Beach.

The Miami Beach Police Department is currently preparing for the annual holiday weekend party, commonly referred to as Urban Beach Week, by beefing up security as much as possible.

Cameras, both mobile and stationary, have been installed throughout the city.

Ready to be deployed throughout the city of Miami Beach are a total of 62 light towers, twelve visual messaging boards and three watch towers.

Roughly 400 officers per shift from multiple agencies will pack the streets of Miami Beach.

In addition to extra bikes and ATVs, the Police Department has a new vehicle on loan referred to as an LTV.

CBS 4 News had the exclusive first look at this 140-thousand dollar light tactical all-terrain vehicle, similar to the ones used in the military. Full Article

Yooket Paen, 57, of Angthong, Thailand accidentally slipped on “farmyard mud,” grabbed a naked live wire and got electrocuted to death.

After the funeral, her sister, Yooket Pan, 52, was showing her neighbors how the accident happened when she herself slipped, grabbed the same live wire and also got electrocuted to death.

Liu Lingchao, 38, from Liuzhou, Guangxi Province, carries his home every day as he moves from place to place.

“I can go anywhere I want to go.

I”s an easy decision when I want to move on,” he said.

Murder plot recorded on phone after man butt-dials 911

Florida – Tip: If you’re plotting to kill somebody, try not to “pocket dial” 911 and have your plans recorded.

That’s exactly what Scott Simon did after getting into a fight with another man at a Waffle House in the early hours, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

On a recorded line, Simon can be heard telling someone else that he’s going to follow the victim home and kill him.

Minutes later, 33-year-old Nicholas Walker was shot and killed while driving his car onto Interstate 95 in Oakland Park.

Homicide detectives arrested Simon, 24, of Pompano Beach Tuesday night. He is charged with first-degree murder. Full Article

YORK, Pennsylvania – A couple face charges after police in York County say they stabbed each other during an argument over which contestant should win ‘American Idol.’

The York Dispatch reports 48-year-old Karen Elaine Harrelson and 57-year-old Gregory Stambaugh had been watching the show at Stambaugh’s West Manchester Township home.

Police say they got into a drunken argument over which contestant – Candice Glover or Kree Harrison – should win the season’s title.

Investigators say one went to the kitchen, grabbed a knife and stabbed the other.

The person stabbed first then grabbed the knife and stabbed the other. Full Article

Cell phone video shows a ball park snow cone vendor sitting on a toilet in a stall with an entire box full of the products he’s about to sell.

They sit on the bathroom floor right next to him.

The person who recorded the video and gave it to Local 2 said: “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. This guy is taking a dump. There’s no doubt about it.

What sane person could possibly think, yeah this is a good idea. I’ll just put the food that I’m about to sell on the floor.”

Man commits suicide by driving off a cliff, not discovered for 26 years

Colorado – Skeletal remains recovered Friday from a vehicle southwest of Gateway are confirmed as belonging to a 65-year-old man reported missing 26 years ago, the Mesa County Coroner’s Office said today.

Ronald Vasey had attempted suicide and made similar threats prior to his reported disappearance by family in Mesa County in 1987, the coroner’s office said in a release.

“All evidence gathered points to this being a suicide,” the coroner’s release said.

Mesa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Matt Lewis told The Daily Sentinel a man hiking alone along steep terrain off John Brown Canyon Road called 911. Full Article

Brother’s house painted pink during honeymoon

SOUTHEND, England – A British man said he painted his honeymooning brother’s house pink with white spots in revenge for a similar prank six years ago.

Russell O’Rourke, 35, said his painted the Southend, England, house while his brother, Steve, 32, and his bride, Hayley, 31, were on their two-week honeymoon on the Greek island of Rhodes, The Mirror reported Wednesday.

Russell said Steve built a 4-foot-high brick wall across his driveway while Russell was on his own honeymoon six years ago.

“What you reap is what you sow,” Russell said.

“The neighbors were coming out asking what I was doing painting their house. I reckon there were hundreds of people stopping and taking pictures. Even the police were slowing down to take a look.” Full Article

Veterinary surgeons remove tiger’s basketball-sized hairball

CLEARWATER, Florida – It’s not unusual for a cat to get a hairball, but a 400-pound tiger needed help from veterinary surgeons in Florida when he couldn’t hack up a basketball-size hairball by himself.

The 17-year-old tiger named Ty underwent the procedure Wednesday at a veterinary center in the Tampa Bay area community of Clearwater.

Doctors said in a statement that they safely removed the 4-pound obstruction from Ty’s stomach.

The tiger, which is cared for by Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation in Seminole, was brought to veterinarians after not eating for nearly two weeks.

Doctors said they detected the hairball using a scope with a camera. Full Article

Three face federal charges for jumping on manatees, face jail

COCOA BEACH, Florida - Three men could face federal wildlife abuse charges after a video showed a man jumping onto two manatees in a South Florida canal, officials say.

The video, posted on Facebook and YouTube, was recorded a year ago in a Cocoa Beach neighborhood, The Orlando Sentinel reported Tuesday.

A man and two friends are shown in the video luring an adult manatee and a calf close to a dock with fresh water from a hose.

The adult manatee is jumped on by one of the men cannonball-style. The calf is almost hit too.

The manatees try to swim away as the men laugh and the diver swims back to the dock. Full Article

STOCKTON-ON-TEES, England – A British man whose broken arm took six years to mend said he broke it again the day after his final treatment when he tripped over his dog.

Tim Blackburn, 50, of Stockton-on-Tees, England, said he busted his right arm when he fell off a ladder in 2007 and doctors had to remove 4 inches of bone and attach a metal scaffold around the arm, The Sun reported Wednesday.

Blackburn said the arm was finally healed this month using a new ultrasound technique, but it snapped again the day after the final treatment when he tripped over Jackson, his 2-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier, and tumbled down the stairs. Full Article

FBI agent ends interview – shoots, kills man being questioned in Boston bombing probe

ORLANDO, Florida – An FBI agent in Orlando shot dead a man questioned in the Boston bombing investigation whom the agency says turned violent during an interview early Wednesday.

The suspect was identified by the FBI as Ibragim Todashev, 27, of Orlando.

FBI spokesman Paul Bresson said the agent involved in the shooting on Peregrine Avenue near Kirkman and Vineland roads, near Universal Orlando, acted on an imminent threat and shot Todashev during an interview.

A source told FOX 25 News in Boston that Todashev was being questioned by an FBI agent from Boston about an unsolved triple murder in Waltham, Mass.

The source said Todashev became violent during the interview and was shot by the agent. Full Article

FEMA uses ‘Waffle House index’ to take stock of Oklahoma tornado disaster

Oklahoma – When the main US federal emergency agency arrives at the scene of a disaster-hit area, one of the first places it turns to is the local Waffle House – and not just for its officials to grab a quick bite.

Craig Fugate, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, came up with the idea of the “Waffle House index” as an informal way of measuring the impact of a disaster.

The chain, which has a large number of branches in tornado-prone areas, has a robust emergency management plan.

The index has three levels.

If the local Waffle House is up and running, serving a full menu, a disaster is classed as green. If it is running with an emergency generator and serving only a limited menu, it is a yellow. If it is closed, badly damaged or totally destroyed, as during hurricane Katrina, it is a red.

But the Moore, Oklahoma, tornado was classed as a yellow on the Waffle House index because managers were hoping to get it up and running soon. Full Article

Bank robber wears green floor-length gown

Iowa – Stuart police are looking for someone who robbed a local bank while wearing a bright green dress, officials said.

Officers responded to a report of a bank robbery at First State Bank in Stuart around 3:45 p.m. Monday, authorities said.

The suspect handed the teller a note demanding money and the teller complied, police said.

The suspect fled and a witness later reported seeing the suspect climb into the trunk of a car parked in a nearby alley. Full Article
