ringLin Keitch, 69, from Monkton Heathfield near Taunton, Somerset, noticed it while washing her home-grown vegetables.

It had been a 40th birthday present from her husband Dave, and was lost by their daughter.

The couple believe the carrot grew through the ring. Ms Keitch said it was a “chance in a million” discovery.

“Dave dug up the carrots and left them outside the back door,” she said.

“I cut the greens off and scrubbed them, and I thought, ‘What’s that? Goodness, it’s my ring’.”

She said even though the ring, with an amethyst stone in the centre, was covered in earth she recognised it immediately.

Mormons don’t want you calling them Mormons anymore

mormonsThe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is embarking on a rebranding effort of sorts.

The church, commonly referred to as the Mormons, really wants people to stop using that word.

It also wants people to stop using LDS as an abbreviation.

From now on, it prefers that people use the church’s full name, and when a shortened reference is needed, to just use “the Church” or “Church of Jesus Christ.”

These preferences are contained in a new style guide that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released Thursday.

It states that while “the term ‘Mormon Church’ has long been publicly applied to the Church as a nickname, it is not an authorized title, and the Church discourages its use.” It also asks that the term “Mormons” not be used in references to members.

Also out: the word “Mormonism,” which the style guide states is an “inaccurate” word to use to describe the “doctrine, culture and lifestyle unique to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” But the word Mormon is fine to use in proper names, like the Book of Mormon, or in historical expressions like the Mormon Trail.

on fireAn 88-year-old man posted a $2,000 bond and walked out of the Brevard County Jail on Friday, after being accused of burning a raccoon he had trapped.

His first time in jail, Ezra James said he feared the raccoon would bite him and give him rabies. He said he also planned to kill the raccoon for eating mangos in his yard.

“I throw some gasoline on him and I light a match,” James said.

Moments later, as the raccoon burned alive, a neighbor called 911, James said.

James called that neighbor a “wicked woman.”

“My business is my business. I don’t take my business to strangers,” said James. He also said he wouldn’t apologize to some disturbed neighbors.

James said he did not know authorities would have humanely euthanized the raccoon.

Palm Bay police said an officer had to shoot the raccoon to put it out of its misery.

James will have some explaining to do to neighbors who thought he was a nice guy.

“Maybe the man is losing it to do something like that,” Ana DeJesus said.

“I can’t stand what people do to animals anymore. They need to live too,” Nancy Gill said.

James rode a taxi home Friday from the county jail. His next court date is not scheduled yet.

tacosFancy a tarantula taco for a cool $27? Not so fast, Mexican authorities say.

A Mexico City market restaurant recently put the arachnids on its menu and posted a video on Facebook showing a chef torching one until blackened.

The only problem: The Mexican red rump tarantula is a protected species.

The federal environmental protection agency said Tuesday it was alerted to the situation via social media and seized four tarantula corpses that were ready to be served up on tortillas.

The tarantula tacos were apparently on offer for 500 pesos, or 50 times the price of a basic street taco.

The restaurant’s menu also features other creepy-crawlies such as grasshoppers, worms and ant eggs, which have a long tradition in Mexican cuisine, and scorpions, which are less common.

fatherA 77-year-old Selma man was found guilty in the 2016 shooting of his son during an argument over wings during an NFL game.

A Dallas County jury convicted John Louis Caver of first-degree domestic violence Tuesday after a one-day trial. District Attorney Michael Jackson said the shooting happened Feb. 7, 2016.

The family was watching Sunday football and an argument erupted between father and son over the food. Caver’s wife tried to separate them, but Caver shot the adult son in the chest. The son survived the injury.

“This must have been some really good chicken,” Jackson said after Tuesday’s verdict.

During Tuesday’s trial, according to court records, Caver began cursing during his testimony and was found in contempt of court. Circuit Judge Collins Pettaway Jr. sentenced him to 24 hours in the county jail for contempt but suspended that sentence provided he continues to behave well.

Sentencing on the felony domestic violence conviction is set for Nov. 19. He could face up to 20 years in prison.

Man shouldn’t have gone to jail for getting a job at Michael’s instead of Home Depot, court rules

courtAlfred Scott was arrested for a first-time marijuana offense last year, but he was willing to plead guilty and he even lined up a full-time job at Home Depot to show he deserved mercy.

But when that job fell through and he got a job at Michael’s instead, Judge Russell Healey seemed to insist that the job needed to be at Home Depot. Healey decided his mercy had been worn out. For getting a job at the wrong store, Healey sent Scott to jail for 90 days.

That decision was overturned last Friday by an appellate court that said Healey failed to find Scott had willfully violated his probation.

Scott’s sentencing score was so low that state prison wasn’t even a possibility. But Judge Healey told him he would face 90 days in county jail for selling marijuana. When Scott said he had a job offer at Home Depot, Healey offered mercy, saying he’d let him out of jail on the condition “that he gets a job, full-time job, or show at least five applications per week until he gets a job.”

But a Department of Corrections probation officer said Home Depot rescinded the job offer likely because of the conviction, but “he’s been complying with everything I asked him to do.”

Scott got a full-time job at Michael’s and a part-time job at McDonald’s. In total, he was working 60 hours a week. But that wasn’t good enough for Judge Healey.

manA local business owner expressed surprise that a naked man police said broke into his liquor store and that police said he only helped himself to a soda.

Police said the man used a hammer to break into the Forsyth County liquor store earlier this week.

“The surveillance video shows it all. Police say the only thing the accused burglar tried to take—-was a can of Coke,” said Jamie Kurisko.

A local business owner expressed surprise that a naked man police said broke into his liquor store and that police said he only helped himself to a soda.

“The surveillance video shows it all. Police say the only thing the accused burglar tried to take—-was a can of Coke,” said Jamie Kurisko.

Kurisko said he had always believed that if anybody broke into his liquor store, they’d be after cash and maybe booze.

“I was pretty angry nut a little relieved because I figured he wasn’t in the store to rob it,” Kurisko said.

During the wee hours of Monday morning, Cumming police said an accused burglar used a hammer to smash through the glass doors of Beverage World.

The surveillance video shows except for a pair of shoes, the man wasn’t wearing a stitch of clothing.

Officers say Charles Wyatt, 61, walked around the store, helped himself to a can of soda then laid down on the floor for a few minutes.

toysThe mother of a little girl who went on a secret $350 Amazon shopping spree in Utah has decided to donate the toys and games to the local children’s hospital.

Catherine Lunt didn’t learn about her 6-year-old Katelyn’s purchases until it was too late and the delivery driver arrived at their Salt Lake City home with a stack of boxes.

“On Friday, I just went online to check something and I noticed a couple items there that I hadn’t ordered,” she told KSL-TV. “I canceled them because they hadn’t been shipped yet, and then I started looking and there was about three more pages of items.”

Katelyn’s older cousin, Ria Diyaolu, told BuzzFeed News the little girl had been allowed to order a Barbie from the online retailer for her birthday with her mom’s supervision. But after getting a taste for online shopping, she decided she wanted more.

Diyaolu shared an image of Katelyn on Twitter standing beside the stack of packages from her recent purchase with a sly grin on her face, which quickly went viral.

“She knew exactly what she was doing when she did it. I was so surprised that a 6-year-old knew how to do one-click, next-day shipping,” Diyaolu said. “She’s a little scammer in the making.”

Lunt said she initially was going to return the toys to Amazon, but decided to give them to Primary Children’s Hospital, instead.

“Katelyn was in Primary Children’s when she was born, so we’ve been wanting to donate something over there,” Lunt said. “She actually had a stroke the first week she was born.”

nailsA 25-year-old man from southern China ate 87 nails and 7 push pins earlier this month, which resulted in doctors performing a four-hour surgery two days later to extract the metal objects, according to Chinese video platform Mango TV.

Gastrointestinal surgeons of the First People’s Hospital of Chenzhou, located in southern China’s Hunan province, are seen on video removing the collective mass of nails residing in the man’s upper body and a few additional nails that migrated near his groin.

The four-hour surgery was documented by Mango TV. The video shows surgeons removing each individual nail around 4 to 5 cm long. The man regained consciousness and is in recovery.

Swallowing that many nails is very dangerous for a variety of reason, gastrointestinal surgeon Huzhihui explains in the video. Doctors were concerned about the nails traveling to his intestines which could puncture them. The foreign metal objects’ presence could also lead to abdominal infections, as the metal reacts with stomach acid, he explained.

The push pins were removed naturally through the man’s digestive tract, Mango TV reported.

Although the man told doctors he ate accidentally ate a bun that was filled with nails, doctors speculate the man may have had suicidal tendencies since he gave them a “farewell letter” to give his girlfriend, according to Daily Mail.

“Maybe it’s because they had an argument, because he couldn’t get over it,” Hu said in the video.

A doctor cracked his own knuckles for 60 years to prove it doesn’t cause arthritis

knucklesMaybe you’re the kind of person who cracks your knuckles every now and then (much to the dismay of fellow coworkers, friends and family).

Your mother may have warned you at some point that, in doing so, you’re damaging your joints — but how much truth is there in that “old wives’ tale”?

It seems that the sound, albeit unpleasant, has absolutely no association whatsoever with joint inflammation, with universities such as Harvard and Johns Hopkins joining the list of scientific institutions that, for years, have denied that cracking one’s knuckles can cause arthritis.

Well, going off scientific research, none. The only negative effect of cracking our joints, it appears, is that it disgusts and upsets those around us. It seems that the sound, albeit unpleasant, has absolutely no association whatsoever with joint inflammation, with universities such as Harvard and Johns Hopkins joining the list of scientific institutions that, for years, have denied that cracking one’s knuckles can cause arthritis.

Previous studies alluded to the possibility that knuckle-cracking could lead to reduced grip strength or weakened joints, but a 2017 study by the University of California found that those who did click their knuckles had the same levels of swelling, ligament weakness and physical function as those who didn’t.

lighterDoctors at a Chinese hospital said it took two surgeries to remove a lighter from the stomach of a man who swallowed it 20 years ago.

A video recorded at a hospital in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, using a camera inserted into the man’s body to locate the plastic and metal lighter in his stomach.

The man told doctors he had accidentally swallowed the lighter 20 years earlier, but didn’t seek medical attention until recently, when he started having stomach aches and bloody stools.

Doctors said an initial attempt to remove the lighter was unsuccessful, but a second surgery lasted only 10 minutes and ended with the device being successfully extracted.

28A team of doctors in Britain performed surgery on a woman with a swollen eyelid and found the cause — a contact lens that had been in her eye for 28 years.

Doctors Sirjhun Patel, Lai-Ling Tan and Helen Murgatroyd said in a report published on BMJ Case Reports that the 42-year-old woman suffered swelling just below her left eyebrow and the cause was thought to be a cyst that steadily grew over a six month period.

“It was later revealed that the patient experienced childhood trauma while wearing RGP contact lenses 28 years previously,” the authors wrote.

“The patient assumed that the RGP lens fell out and was lost; however, it can be inferred that the lens migrated into the eyelid and resided there asymptomatically for 28 years.”

armFirefighters in Connecticut said they executed an unusual rescue when a 2-year-old boy got his arm stuck in a Thomas the Tank Engine toy.

The Danbury Fire Department said firefighters and EMS crews were called to a Danbury home on Wednesday on a report of a toddler with his arm stuck in the smokestack of a large Thomas the Tank Engine toy.

The department said the “tot in toy” call became further complicated when firefighters attempting to dismantle Thomas discovered the smokestack was a launcher for toy balls.

They said it took about 20 minutes to free the child’s arm, which was not injured. Firefighters said the boy’s arm had become stuck inside the toy because of a bracelet he was wearing on his wrist.
