Goat-Herding Dog Refused To Abandon Flock Amid Firestorm

dogSANTA ROSA — With the deadly flames of the Tubbs Fire bearing down on his property, Roland Tembo Hendel knew it was time to round up his family, dogs and cats flee.

But there simply was no room for the family’s flock of goats.

“By 11:10 we could see the first of the flames across the valley,” he wrote on his Facebook page. “By 11:15 they were growing larger and the winds went mad. We had loaded up the dogs and cats, but Odin, our stubborn and fearless Great Pyrenees would not leave the goats.”

Odin — living up to the Norse god he is named after — would not abandon the flock.

So the family reluctantly and with heavy hearts, watched Odin was they were departing, hoping they would see him again but knowing it was likely he would not survive.

“Even under the best of circumstances it is nearly impossible to separate Odin from the goats after nightfall when he takes over the close watch from his sister Tessa,” Hendel wrote. “I made a decision to leave him, and I doubt I could have made him come with us if I tried.”  More

SICKROME — An Italian librarian who says her English setter is her family has won the right from her employer to use family sick leave to care for her ailing pet instead of having to use vacation days.

Italian animal advocacy group LAV says it helped persuade public La Sapienza University to let her use two days’ family sick leave to care for 12-year-old Cucciola.

LAV president Gianluca Felicetti says in a statement anyone who obtains a veterinarian’s certificate should enjoy the same benefit, citing Cucciola’s case as precedent.

The woman said Cucciola is recovering well from surgery for a breast tumor and a larynx problem.  More

dog hospitalCEDAR RAPIDS - Nancy Franck and her two miniature schnauzers, Sissy and Barney, live in southeast Cedar Rapids. Franck, however, has been staying 15 to 20 blocks away at Mercy Medical Center following a surgery.

She’s been in the hospital for about two weeks.

Last Saturday Nancy’s husband, Dale, was devastated when Sissy unexpectedly ran away from home

“We looked up and there was this dog just that was just running across the lobby,” said Mercy Security Officer Samantha Conrad.

It’s a surprise visitor no one expected: a dog in a hospital. Security cameras caught it all. Just like anybody would, Sissy wondered through two automatic doors and strolls right into Mercy Medical Center.  More

chiHIGHLAND, California – A two-legged chihuahua found as a stray in California last week has found a new home with the county’s supervising animal control officer.

Doug Smith, supervising animal control officer for San Bernardino County, entered his name in a Sunday morning lottery for the dog after no one came forward to claim him by the Saturday night deadline.

Smith’s daughter, Rodri, took an instant shine to the chihuahua, who was named Joey by rescuers.

Joey, who has only a left front leg and a right back leg, was found running loose Feb. 3 and did not have a collar or a microchip to identify his owner. However, officers said he was in good health and appeared well-fed.  More

bearNutty News Juneau, Alaska – Black bears in residential neighborhoods aren’t exactly unheard of in Juneau. While many people stay inside when bears are about, one local woman says she had a different instinct when she saw her dog was in trouble. It started out as a typical evening for 22-year-old Brooke Collins. She let her dogs out as usual but this time, she said there was a black bear outside who took hold of her dachshund Fudge. She said she feared for her pet’s life and, in an instant, ran over and punched the bear right in the face to make it let go. “It was all so fast. All I could think about was my dog was going to die,” said Collins. Her dog suffered some claw and bite marks but they weren’t deep so she said she decided not to take Fudge to the vet.  More   Click on the Nutty News reporter at the top, left column for another Nutty News story

diamondsNutty News Albany, Georgia – The pooch dined on a meal of $10,000 worth of diamonds. Honey Bun often walks the counters at John Ross Jewelers. He’s not much of a guard dog, but he is great with customer relations. “He’s been loved,” said co-owner Chuck Roberts. Customers sometimes hide treats in their purse for Honey Bun. It happened two weeks ago when a customer came in. “A customer came in and I jumped up out of my chair and came out here to wait on him. And I left the chair where you could jump up on my chair and jump up on my desk,” said Roberts. On the desk: four packs of loose diamonds, about a carat each to set in diamond earrings, pens, and dog treats. When he returned, only three packs remained, and an empty pouch was lying on the floor. “The next afternoon, sure enough, the earring back and two diamonds were recovered.”  More    Click on the Nutty News reporter at the top, left column for another Nutty News story

She had to be euthanized at the veterinary office later that evening because of her extreme injuries. Gilliand hopes she can get cage driers banned, but said consumers should at least see a posted warning when they drop off their pet.  More   Nutty News Today   Nutty News for iPhone   Nutty News for Android Phones   Nutty Videos   Nutty News Facebook Fan Page   Nutty News on Twitter   Nutty Videos on Twitter   Register A Website Address – Choose A Hosting Package – Easy Do-It-Yourself Websites - HostWink.com  Nutty News Marketplace
