800Virginia – The cremation of an oversized body apparently helped set ablaze the roof of a crematory Wednesday when the smokestack overheated and set roofing material on fire.

The fire at Southside Cremation Services, in the 1600 block of Crump Street, started shortly after noon and was extinguished by Richmond and Henrico County fire crews by 12:43, according to the Henrico County Division of Fire.

Manager Jerry L. Hendrix Sr. said Wednesday afternoon that he’s received a go-ahead to resume cremating an 800-pound cadaver that created excessive heat and oil during a cremation.

He said the facility is known across Virginia for handling large people.  More

mil fireWashington DC – While the Veterans Administration struggles to repair the damage caused by shoddy — and in some cases fraudulent — handling of health care for American service members, benefits for millions who served their country in four wars were wiped out in a fire more than 40 years ago, leaving many battling to this day to collect their due.

The blaze that ripped through the National Personnel Records Center in a St. Louis suburb shortly after midnight on July 12, 1973, consumed 16 million to 18 million official military personnel files long before computers kept such records safe from harm.

Few could have predicted the harm it would visit on the veterans who were denied VA benefits — some to this day — because they could not reconstruct their military service files.  More

teacher3Nutty News USA – It took the Los Angeles school district five years at a cost of $3.5 million to fire six teachers for poor performance. In Washington, D.C., 75 teachers were dismissed for alleged incompetence. One teacher was let go for playing DVDs in class, another missed 20 days of work in two months. All ended up being reinstated by an arbitrator. The story is similar in New York City where hundreds of teachers considered too inept to teach are kept out of classrooms, but continue to collect full salaries and benefits. Under the new proposal it would still take as long as 15 months to remove a teacher who’s ultimately determined unfit to be in a classroom.  More…
