jacobsA Pennsylvania woman who repeatedly bludgeoned her mother with a frying pan and hammer because she “just wanted peace and quiet” pleaded guilty Thursday after the prosecutor agreed to drop attempted murder charges.

Kimberly A. Jacobs, 47, called Northern York County police Sept. 5 after she hit her mother, Lenore Jacobs, in the head up to 20 times with a pan followed by a 4-pound hammer but still failed to kill her, The Patriot-News reported.

The elder Jacobs, in her daughter’s care for several years, was bleeding heavily and suffered skull fractures when police arrived.

“My daughter was trying to kill me because I was crying,” the elder Jacobs told police, according to The Patriot-News. “She just kept hitting me.”

Jacobs confessed she planned to kill her mother, father — who was asleep — and then herself.  More

Obit Bob SimonCBS newsman Bob Simon’s black-car driver was a rookie with nine license suspensions who is suspected of speeding during the fatal crash — and had just one hand on the wheel because he had a “dead” left arm from a suicide attempt, sources said Thursday.

Investigators believe Abdul Reshad Fedahi, a 44-year-old Afghan immigrant who lives in a homeless shelter, mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake after sideswiping a car on the West Side Highway at about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, law-enforcement sources said.

“He hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. He sped up after hitting the car,” a law-enforcement source told The Post.

Simons, a “60 Minutes’’ correspondent and legendary war reporter, was sitting in the rear seat without his seat belt, sources said. He suffered a broken neck and severe stomach and head trauma.  More

OutramUK – A woman killed herself on her 30th birthday after being filmed shoplifting for a “caught on camera” television show, an inquest heard.

Friends tried in vain to save Elizabeth Outram when they found her hanging unconscious at her home in Hackney after a night out to celebrate her birthday at the Shard last September.

Poplar coroners’ court heard how Miss Outram had suffered from depression, anxiety and panic attacks since 2007 but her condition had stabilised by last summer when she went to a friend’s hen party in Brighton.

Unable to afford a leather jacket for the rock-themed night, she switched price tags in a TK Maxx store but was detained at the till and subsequently charged with fraud. The incident was captured by a TV production company who were filming in the shop for a reality show.  More

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit in Cincinnati rejected the appeal from Maria Waltherr-Willard, 63, who had accused the Mariemont district of age discrimination and a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

comcastNew Mexico – As if you needed another reason to hate Comcast, the company’s latest customer blunder involves cashing an elderly woman’s rent check sent to Comcast by accident and initially refusing to reimburse her.

ABQ’s KRQE reports 79-year-old Francis Wilson accidentally mailed her rent check to Comcast.

When the mistake was discovered, Wilson not only learned that Comcast cashed the check (despite the check not being made out to Comcast) but that it refused to give the check back or refund Wilson.

Instead, the company credited Wilson the $235.

Of course, Comcast refused to pay Wilson back until the local news started calling.  More

Heather ChoHeather Cho, the former Korean Air executive who ordered an international flight to return to the gate over how macadamia nuts were served in first class, has been sentenced to a year in jail.

The judge said that Cho was a passenger on the Korean Air flight and could not override crew members and give orders during a flight.

On December 5, Cho, the daughter of the airline chairman, ordered an international flight back to the gate at New York’s JFK airport after becoming dissatisfied that her macadamia nuts were served in a bag instead of on a plate in first class.

She had the chief steward removed from the flight after the plane had departed from the gate.  More

Altogether, they create the impression of a happy face in the galaxy cluster.

In reality, the two “eyes” are each a distant galaxy, and the curved lines come from light that has been bent by gravity around the galaxy cluster — an effect known as gravitational lensing.  More

Puerto Rico considers fining parents of fat kids

prSAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Legislators in Puerto Rico are debating a bill that would fine parents of obese children up to $800 if they don’t lose weight.

If approved, public school teachers would flag potential obesity cases and refer them to a counselor or social worker, depending on the severity of the case.

Health Department officials would then meet with the parents and determine whether the obesity is a result of bad eating habits or a medical condition.

They also would create a diet-and-exercise program combined with monthly visits to ensure it’s being followed.  More

raccoonTEMPLE CITY – The Health Department has taken action after a local supermarket’s frozen foods section featured an unusual item.

Inspectors from the LA County Health Department visited the Metro Supermarket in Temple City on Tuesday, after being informed that the market was selling raccoons as food.

Employees at the market declined to appear on camera, but did show entire raccoons, frozen, bagged, and selling for $9.99 per pound. The employees say raccoon is considered a delicacy in China.

“The way it’s packaged in the store, it’s so real, and it’s so fresh, and you don’t see chickens with their feathers and blood all over them, and their expression, with their tongue hanging out,” Dow said.  More
